George's Fried Chicken Curry — Restaurant in Kyoto

My friends and I stopped by here based on the reviews for some curry. Despite the unbearable heat outside, we were welcomed by the very friendly staff and cool air from the AC. Now, for the food: the curry was phenomenal. All five people in my party agreed it was the best meal we had had in Japan thus far (we had been there for 8 days). It doesn’t end there. I was attracted by perfect 5* rating but I have to admit reality is different.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the place, it is a good 'cheap' place (maybe relatively?) to visit but in terms of value for money (2 shrimps with curry rice for 1400 yen) or overwhelming tastiness it just isn't there. Some may argue this is the price in a touristy part of Kyoto, but I'm not buying it.

You can still visit, but just temper your expectations when eating here.

At ¥1,600, the portion size and overall quality simply didn't justify the price. The curry tasted identical to store-bought, and the cutlet was notably tough. Honestly, a convenience store meal would meet this standard for far less money. The staff appeared to be a small group of young part-timers, not the elderly couple I might have expected.
