La Voiture — Restaurant in Kyoto

Prompted by J-Foodie K-Foodie on Netflix, drove 45min specially from Uji there to taste their Tarte Tatin. Deeply disappointed. Even without the hype and the long wait, the tarte itself would have been unacceptable if a homebaker made it. Pastry was soggy and paste like at the bottom. Apples were soggy too, like stewed or steamed apple which could not even be picked up with a fork, clearly cooked for way too long at low temperature. It was served with runny yoghurt, strained yoghurt might get away with it perhaps, sour cream or creme fraiche more compatible. Darjeeling tea was watery and tasted like a single teabag brewed in tepid water. Chinaware was pretty though. I now question the taste and culinary judgement of those in the Netflix series, definitely will not buy into any of their featured places anymore. A week prior, I had an impressively made Tarte Tatin in Ine at a tiny cafe near the lighthouse, no hype, no fame, just a good baker. Sadly, La Voiture is famous for being famous. Go there to admire the chinaware and the antique pieces, but not for their famous tarte tatin. The worst pastry I have ever tasted by...

An old school cafe famous for its tarte tatin. Staff were pleasant, and the shop had some cute / endearing bits (the tarte tatin candles, pop-up menu, etc.), but I didn’t really understand what the hype was about?

For my taste, the apples in the tarte tatin could be cooked at a higher temperature, but a shorter period of time, because right now they are well caramelised but rather mushy. I prefer my apples to have some bounce. Furthermore, creme fraiche or creme anglaise would have been better accompaniments to the tart than the provided yoghurt, which didn’t have the creaminess and slight sweetness to complement the dish (also, the yoghurt was already splitting?).

If you’re in the neighbourhood and are looking for a place to relax, it’s a good option. But I wouldn’t travel out of my way...
