Former Butoku Hall — Local services in Kyoto

武徳殿は、延暦15年（796）に完成した平安京大内裏（だいだいり）の殿舎の一つで、大極殿の北西に建てられていました。弓場殿（ゆばどの）とも呼ばれ、前方の馬場で騎射が行われていました。 平安中期以後、しばしば焼亡と再興を繰り返していましたが、平安遷都1100年記念事業の一環として明治28年（1895）に設立された大日本武徳会が、伝統的武道の振興を願って武徳殿の再建を目指し、明治32年（1899）平安神宮内に最古の演武場として落成しました。当初は「仮本殿」と称され、改築を前提としていましたが実現しなかったため、大正2年（1913）には背面に玉座と車寄が増築されました。 第二次世界大戦後の政策により駐留軍の管理下におかれることとなり、昭和26年（1951）に京都市が買い受けた後は警察学校や、京都市音楽短期大学施設として利用されていました。

昭和58年（1983）6月京都市の文化財として指定される際、市指定文化財としての解体調査を行い、大正2年当時の状態に修復しました。現在は『京都市武道センター・旧武徳殿』として剣道、柔道、なぎなた、太極拳、空手等の大会場や練習場として使用されています。平成8年7月には、『旧武徳殿』として国の重要文化財に指定されました。 The Butokuden was one of the buildings in the Daidairi of Heian-kyo, completed in 796, and was built northwest of the Daigokuden. Also known as the Yubadono, horse archery was practiced in the riding ground in front of it. Since the mid-Heian period, it has repeatedly burned down and been rebuilt, but the Dai-Nippon Butokukai, which was founded in 1895 as part of the commemorative projects for the 1,100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian, aimed to rebuild the Butokuden in the hopes of promoting traditional martial arts, and in 1899 it was completed as the oldest training ground within Heian Shrine. Initially known as the "temporary main hall," it was intended to be renovated, but this did not come to fruition, so in 1913 a throne room and carriage porch were added to the rear. As a result of post-World War II policies, the building came under the control of the occupying forces, and after it was purchased by Kyoto City in 1951, it was used as a police school and a facility for the Kyoto City Junior College of Music.

When it was designated as a cultural property of Kyoto City in June 1983, a dismantling survey was carried out and it was restored to its state in 1913.
