I found this cafe online whilst hunting for nice vegetarian food during my stay in Kyoto. After hiring bikes, I rode my wife and son a fairly long way to have coffee and breakfast here, and was shocked at the service and cost. After seeing that a cheese toastie was priced at 1500 yen (equivalent to $17 Australian), I thought OK maybe we'll just get a coffee here. Then I enquired about the 1000 yen deal for coffee and a biscuit. No, that is for students! Fail #2. OK I say, so a cappuccino was around 750-800 yen if I recall (eek). "Are those double-shot coffees?", I ask. Nope, single. "Ah, how much for an extra shot?" (I think most of the world is used to ease of access to a double-shot coffee, right!?) "Espresso is 500 yen", was the lady's reply. "Are you saying that I will need to pay for an menu espresso on top of the price of my regular coffee if I want a double-shot coffee?" "Yes, that's correct!", was the reply. That is the time I said c'mon family and headed for the door. Can you imagine travelling all that way for simple meals at 1500+ yen and 3 simple coffees at 1300+ yen each? Even a muffin and a coffee each would have set me back the equivalent of $60 Australian. A shame, as I normally like to support a small cafe offering vegetarian options like the ones I saw...
Read moreVisited this brilliant petit pure vegetarian cafe serving lots of Vegan delights! Below are all the food items we ordered - Hummus toast - It was absolutely delicious! Couldnât have asked for anything more with this one! The bread was amazing and the hummus tasted flavoursome. Bell pepper walnut spread with mushroom sub sandwich - We do not eat mushrooms so the owner was very kind enough to replace it with tofu for us. The sandwich was appetizing and we loved it a lot! It was filled with hummus, tomatoes, some greens and the spread. If I had not been full already, I would have called for another one. Matcha cranberry muffin - Have been having matcha desserts since a few days now in Japan but have never had such an amazing combination of Matcha with cranberry before! It was delectably heavenly. We loved it so much that we called for 1 more of the muffin. The cafe owner Harsha is very kind and lovely and the place is also very pretty with 2 levels of seating available. All in all, We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Shio Veg cafe and would highly recommend visiting here to have some amazing...
Read moreWe went to Shio Veg cafe after an amazing trip to Sanjusangen-do temple yesterday, as a weary group of 5 travellers with a kid and wanted just a warm cup of coffee. Since I wasnât well, I just preferred something simpler- maybe a ginger lemon tea on their menu. Something to make me feel warm and will be easy on the stomach. I was fully prepared to get a sachet dipped in hot water and given to me(as I get always in my place- Singapore)
I was pleasantly surprised when I got a glass of steaming hot, clear liquid which smelled so deliciously of ginger and lemon. I instantly commented to the owner after a sip- this is the best ginger lemon tea ever and she said- yes we make all these syrups home-made from scratch, we donât use any cans, or any processed food and all from scratch. I was so grateful for that soulful tea. Truly felt like a cuppa, mom would have made for me.
We didnât get a chance to eat more there, but am pretty sure every thing they make there would be made with so much passion and care, rest assured!
Best wishes to this cafe, to...
