I cannot explain to you how good Shishio is. By chance we happened upon this place and we were so glad we went.
The food was incredible - we lost count of how many courses came out, but it seemed about 10. Every single course was delicious and was prepared immaculately. Per person, the cost was $60 AUD. There is no way on this god given earth that you would be able to find something this good for that cost in Australia for that price. Furthermore, the hostess gave me a very special Sake which tasted delicious.
My only regret was not being able to speak more Japanese so we could learn more about the chef, staff and venue. However, the entire staff did their best to accomodate for our extremely limited Japanese, even using Google translate to help. This was met by some laughs from the rest of the diners which made the experience more wholesome. The Chef wanted to know where we were from so he asked a patron to help - he was surprised that we said we were from New Zealand given the cold weather in Japan!

Read moreThis place is a bit of a hidden gem. The kaiseki was delicious and was entirely run - from showing us through the door, drinks, service, cooking - by one guy. As we were the only people there that night, service was quick, but can understand some other comments about it being slow if there are a few groups there (the one guy was literally doing everything). He doesn't speak much English, but he has some pre-made cards set up to help communicate with foreigners about food you can't eat and other things. Not only was the food delicious, the owner was so lovely that when we left and it was raining he offered to give us an umbrella when we left! This place was great value and we thoroughly enjoyed our...
Read moreMy friends were all about this place. There is one man handling the kitchen and although he doesn't know much English he did help us out. When reading the menu via Google Translate (thanks Overlords!) I did find out that there were two different versions of the "all-you-can-drink" menus. We did not have all-you-can-drink, the dude cut us off at 5 Sake (we were 4 people) and was quickly to take our monies and ask us to leave. I get it, we're 4 Americans who don't know the language, but I'm giving you 4 out 5 stars here my...
