Sir Thomas Lipton - Porta Shop — Restaurant in Kyoto

We arrived this cafe and would like to take some dessert after dinner. When we ordered a slice of cake the staff told us we ‘must’ order a cake plus a drink! Okay as the cafe seems decent and we eventually ordered one slice of cake each with my partner, he ordered a glass of orange juice and I ordered one of their signatory teas. the tea came with a nice ceramic pot but no teabag, seems it was prepared in whole lot! It cost JPN600! Then the glass of orange juice came with 2/3 of ice and cost JPN560! Before we left the cafe we asked to talk to the shop incharge as we would like to give some feedback, then the response of the incharge left a few seconds after hearing our feedback and came to us with a glass of orange juice then and said it’s like that without ice. In other words they didn’t make anything wrong! What a service in the tourist place!!! The bill was JPN2380, two slices of cake, one tea and one glass of canned orange juice! Surely I wont...

One star for piss poor service specifically at the takeout counter, as I observed the reception lady gave a glance of disgust at my male friend, perhaps because he pointed at a cake as we were discussing which item to buy. If this is the case, they should have raised a banner stating no pointing in front of the cafe!

Strangely, she was quite nice to a customer before us. I believe the customer is Japanese. We are from HK, but the receptionist’s demeanour left a sour taste. I surely hope Lipton does not give preferential treatment towards locals and European tourists, and look down on other Asian tourists.

We came here for dessert one evening and enjoyed some cake, parfait, and tea. Everything was tasty and I rather enjoyed the strawberry cake with the caveat that the strawberries are whole and so it’s a bit difficult to eat them in bites, as well as to maintain the structure of the cake. Most of the shortcakes I’ve seen at other shops seem to serving figs right now, or sometimes grapes, but I wanted strawberries and this was reasonably nice. The ice cream was quite tasty, too.
