Review: Be Careful as Cash Payments only!!
We had a disappointing experience at this cash-only café and want to warn others to be cautious. Our meal cost 3,800 yen, but my partner, unfamiliar with handling yen, accidentally gave the staff 22,000 yen (two 10,000 yen bills and two 1,000 yen bills), thinking he was giving 4,000 yen. He only received 6,200 yen as change, meaning we were overcharged by 12,000 yen.
We didn’t realize the mistake until about 30 minutes later when paying for tickets at a nearby attraction. We returned to the café to discuss it, but due to a language barrier, the conversation had to be done through Google Translate. The staff denied any mistake, but we’re confident it happened here, as my partner had to leave cafe to withdraw cash from the ATM across the street specifically to pay for the meal when we were told cash only. (He thought he was withdrawing 4,000 yen to cover meal but mistakenly withdrew 40,000.)
This experience was incredibly frustrating and expensive. If you visit, which we don’t recommend as food was overpriced even without overcharged amount, please double-check your cash carefully when paying, as mistakes like this...
Read moreWe stopped by this cafe for a quick bite on the way to an event at Arts and Crafts building. We tried to order a single panini to share and were informed we must buy a drink as well. So we ordered a panini and two lemonades. My daughter mentioned how expensive they were so we decided to share a drink instead. A small fresh squeezed lemonade is 990 yen and the ham panini was around the same price. We asked for take out to eat at the bistro table outside. The lemonade was nice. Panini was a bit over toasted but good. While we were enjoying our food outside the woman came out and informed us because we had only ordered one drink, we were only entitled to the use of one chair! At least this was our interpretation. Basically we were told to shove off. We were very taken aback by our treatment at this cafe, as we have been treated so well wherever we’ve travelled so far in Japan. A European couple ahead of us was also complaining about the high prices, and were shocked by their bill. Do yourself a favour and take a pass on this place. Your pocketbook will...
I was surprised to find that the eat-in lunch set only had one or two options and cost over 1,200 yen (excluding tax). Furthermore, there were discrepancies between the menu displayed outside and the explanation of the lunch set given at the register, which was also hard to understand.
To make matters worse, I was told at the time of ordering that there is a mandatory one-drink policy, with drinks averaging around 600 yen. While this is mentioned on the menu in small print at the bottom as an afterthought, the system requires you to pay at the counter in advance, leaving little time to thoroughly review the menu. By the time you realize this, you’re already inside, making it awkward to back out. As a result, the lunch set ends up costing at least 2,000 yen per person. Apart from the lunch set, there is a 1,700-yen cutlet curry option, but it’s nothing special—just an ordinary curry.
Usually, lunch sets include a discounted drink option, so I was surprised by the mandatory one-drink system. What disappointed me even more was the fact that this policy was not mentioned at all when I checked the menu outside; it was only brought up at the time of payment. The advance payment system under such circumstances was also surprising.
Many other people have pointed out similar issues in their reviews, and the staff seems quite accustomed to handling these situations, which makes it even more concerning.
While I understand that it’s a challenging time for the restaurant industry, I think they should adopt clearer pricing practices and reconsider the mandatory...
