Washoku Hōrai — Restaurant in Kyoto

This incredible restaurant we never would have found on our own, only an arched door and a light from the outside. It was the recommendation of a man we met for an educational cultural demonstration in Kyoto, who graciously called his good friend the Chef and made us a reservation for the same day.

Not able to speak much Japanese, my partner and I agreed to sake, sat and were served omakase-style, and ate until we were full.

Every bite was exquisite and masterfully done. The chef and staff were welcoming and kind, the atmosphere genuinely warm and familiar. We enjoyed a conversation with one of the locals who spoke English, joyfully helping us understand our experience without an ounce of judgement.

Great night with chef, bartender and staff.

When we arrived, the izakaya has already been full including bar and private rooms. Luckily, we booked reservations for 2 seats at bar.

The chef and bartender are so friendly, all customers bought beer and cheers with them. The environment is not only like an izakaya; but also it’s like a family or friends party.

Almost likely, everyone at here will enjoy the best izakaya.

We had a wonderful meal -- the chef and kitchen staff delighted us with expertly prepared dishes in an intimate setting. The service we received was both warm and professional. The whole evening was very memorable -- we look forward to returning when we are next in Kyoto, and also to recommending this place to our friends.
