A Delicious Hitsumabushi Experience at 川次, Nagoya
If you’re in Nagoya and craving perfectly grilled unagi (eel), 川次 is the place to be! We had the pleasure of dining here over two consecutive evenings, and it truly lived up to its reputation as a culinary gem.
First Night: Hitsumabushi Set (¥1980 for Half Portion)
On our first visit, we opted for the half-body Hitsumabushi set, priced at just ¥1980—a fantastic deal for such a delightful experience. The unagi was grilled to perfection, boasting a crispy, caramelised exterior with the rich, smoky flavour of the char perfectly complementing the soft, tender eel. Served over a bed of fragrant, steamed rice, the dish was accompanied by a traditional set of condiments including seaweed, spring onions, wasabi, and a light broth. These allowed us to enjoy the Hitsumabushi in the three authentic styles—mixed with rice, as a soup, or savoured with condiments. Each bite was a flavourful journey, perfectly balanced and utterly satisfying.
Second Night: Large Portion Hitsumabushi (¥3575)
The next evening, we couldn’t resist bringing along a friend who had just landed in Nagoya. Although we arrived close to the restaurant's closing time of 8 PM on the first night, we decided to return the following day for the ¥3575 large portion. The moment the meal arrived, we were astonished by the size—it was a feast fit for royalty! The unagi’s flavour and texture were just as immaculate as the previous night, but the larger serving gave us even more reason to savour every bite. The portion was incredibly generous, making it ideal for those with a hearty appetite or for sharing.

◉一尾どかんとのってます。 表面はサクッ! うなごの部位により、肉厚がある部分とない部分がありますが、その焼き方で2通りの食べ方が楽しめますね。
肉厚がある部分は、表面のサクッとした食感と程よい鰻の脂の美味しさを楽しむことができます。 また、肉厚が少ない部分は、濃いタレと表面のサクッとした部分が皮を含めて全体的に感じることができ、一尾の上うなぎ丼の醍醐味だと考えます。
しっぽの部分もタレをたくさん含みサクッと焼いてありますので、旨味の塊ですよ。
ご飯は岐阜県産で若干硬めで、米粒がしっかりしていて、鰻ダレとも上手く絡んで美味しいです。
肝吸に関しては、肝自体が大型で味もしっかり、心地よい苦味とコリコリ食感があり、香りづけもあり完成された碗です。
