Kaminari Sushi is a cosy counter bar, three minutes from Namba and a short stroll from Nippombashi. It’s first-come, first-served, opening around 11:30 a.m. and running until midnight. We waited only a few minutes on arrival; the staff took our order while we sat outside, so by the time we were seated at the tiny counter (with just a handful of seats) the first plates landed almost immediately.
We went big and ordered three generous wooden platters. The first was a parade of salmon nigiri (thick, orange slices draped over warm rice) alongside gunkan overflowing with salty salmon roe. The second board was all about tuna: silky otoro, clean akami, a neat roll of tekka maki, plus two gunkan piled with minced negitoro and a sprinkle of chives.
The finale was the most memorable: three huge pieces of glazed unagi, each nearly palm-length, set next to fat futomaki stuffed with omelette, pickles, cucumber, and bits of fish.
Portions were generous, the rice lightly seasoned, and the fish fresh enough that a touch of soy and wasabi was all it needed. The atmosphere mixed energy with warmth. Knives thudded, rice was shaped at speed, and the owner kept up a lively conversation with regulars while the chefs stayed attentive and fast.
Between the generosity, freshness, and the thrill of watching everything prepared right in front of us, Kaminari easily delivered our best sushi experience in Osaka. A neighbourhood gem that's worth the wait, and worthy of its unofficial status as “Osaka’s No. 1 Sushi Bar.”

Read moreWe discovered Kamirani Sushi, a hidden gem just a few blocks from the Dotonburi bridge, inspired by the positive reviews on Google. We decided to wait as there was a small line at the entrance, where the staff was exceptionally attentive, marking the beginning of our positive experience.
Upon entering, the place, though modest and small, had a charming atmosphere with an authentic sushi bar.
The presence of Japanese diners, besides us, added an extra layer of confidence. We opted for a tuna combo, which was excellent, with the mid-fatty tuna standing out. The salmon combo, on the other hand, was decent. The wagyu nigiris were the highlight of the menu, an explosion of flavor in the mouth that was worth every penny. Additionally, we enjoyed three portions of tuna maki that perfectly complemented everything.
The beer, served in a frozen glass, was exquisite and at the perfect temperature. The service from both the waitress and the sushi chefs was impeccable, always attentive and with smiles.
Although the price was around 13,500 yen for two diners, it's not cheap, but every yen spent was worth it.
Is important to add that the restaurant accept credit card, as a lot restaurants around that area don’t.
