Watched Mark Wiens' video Osaka food trip and went for it on 11 Oct, 7:05am alone when my family was still sleeping.
The next-door competitor had a queue to the street (at least 20 groups), my queue I'm number 4. Still I waited for almost 30mins. On the 20th minute queuing, an old japanese guy came along and stood very close behind me until I looked at him.
And to my shock he was invited in first when a counter seat was available, and I waited for another 7mins. No explanation. This is surprising to a country that shows politeness in many ways.
My 'Kaisen Don' came immediately when I sat down because the order was taken at the queue. First look very impressive, the sashimi was glistening and I dug in immediately. I was not impressed - the sashimi was sliced quite thinly and the taste fresh but on the bland side. On my left sat 4 Japanese people, and they left with half the sashimi untouched. Miso soup was good though.
Overall, I wouldn't go out of the way to queue for this cos it didn't wow me in any way, not the food nor the service. The respect if not shown on people - will be lacking also in the...
Read moreThe seafoods were pretty fresh, chu toro was pretty good, salmon roe was good as well. Ika(squid) was fresh and chewy, kampachi (amberjack) and the raw red shrimp was good. The boiled shrimp was surprisingly good and fresh although I am not a fan of boiled shrimp. Urchin was not too good as it was not sweet and it has a strange taste that you can tell it is not very fresh. It could be from a specific piece / batch of urchin and still acceptable, because the only place I had had sweet and fresh urchin was in Hokkaido (Otaru).
Overall this place is pretty good although the customers are over 90% of tourists/ foreigners. Prices are reasonable but I wouldn’t grab one piece of Otoro (Fattiest tuna belly) sushi for ¥900 which you could get outside at ¥500-600.
Atmosphere wise, it is an old style fish market restaurant which you should expect and enjoy it. But the restaurant is really small and packed so please DON’T bring...
Read moreto be honest, i came to this area because of the hype of the next door restaurant. its indeed popular with queues and waiting times up to an hour depending what time u reach. then i saw maruyoshi next door and took a look at its menu which is roughly serving similar stuffs. everything looked good actually and there were people eating in. decided to try out here instead. the chefs at the counter were nice and friendly. attend to you promptly. ordered the toro don and kaisendon. it’s absolutely yummilicious! i would say that i’m a regular eater of such seafood bowls and will say that the food here ranks high up there, at least based on this experience. not losing to the ones i have in hokkaido and tokyo. the fish were so fresh. each bite was just so addictive. glad i went in. of cos this is not to say the neighbouring stall isn’t good, just didn’t manage to try it, and not sure if it’s...
