After a long day of exploring the different parts of Osaka, we decided to dine in at this small establishment for dinner seeing that their specialty was chicken curry and we were craving it after previously eating curry at a well-known Coco franchise store. If I were to say anything about Mary Spice and their curry, it is that it did not disappoint. The sauce compared to Coco presented itself with a perfect level of spice which had a kick to it but was manageable and presenting itself with a strong combination of flavours in comparison. The pork katsu was juicy and the chicken worked quite well with the curry sauce, although I imagine any meat would work well considering how good their sauce is (it is no joke). If you enjoy alcohol, then you will love having it with their curry. My partner also liked the jerk chicken as it was packed with flavour and juiciness (forgot to take a picture). Additionally, the interior design and music contributed to the ambience inside their small establishment and was made all the better with their willingness to provide great service. All in all, both their chicken and pork katsu curry was amazing, I would 100% recommend to anyone visiting Osaka as the owners are also very friendly and make the experience that much more personal...
Read moreStumbled upon this small business being a 3 minute walk from our hotel for lunch. Food was so delicious that I had to come back the next evening for dinner and explore more of the menu!! Customers have the pleasure of being able to see the chefs prepare the meal. The curry was so flavorful especially with the spices the owners have included in their special recipe and paired well with the perfectly fried katsu. The chicken over rice had a taste reminiscent of what Americans call "Halal food." I STRONGLY recommend the fried white fish too as the sauces were perfectly paired. The ice cream was a comforting way to cleanse the palette of such a delicious meal consisting of delicious spices. Only regret is not having tried the katsu curry with any additionals (egg, cheese, etc.). The small business seems to be managed by two brothers (both of whom I witnessed cook upon my separate visits for lunch and dinner) and both provide splendid service. At the end of my meal, I was given a sticker of their restaurant logo! So cute Will definitely come back on a future...
Read moreOne of the foodie highlights of a three week trip across Japan — Mary Spice was a gem of a find and is a true Katsu Curry spice Master! This one-man 8 seater restaurant is tucked down a quiet residential street. Having to wait patiently to get inside felt like something revelatory was going to be revealed — the aromas of fried chicken and curry spice will have you salivating. Both the pork and chicken cutlets were deeply crunchy and crisp, yielding to juiciness inside. The magic was in the curry sauce — none of the floury mass-produced nonsense, this sauce was made thick with caramelised onions (I asked the chef), and the spicing was deeply aromatic, complex, earthy with a nice kick at the end. It was a hearty lunch (order the side of grilled onions for that added sweetness) and amazing value for a meal cooked with care and diligence. The restaurant vibe is unique, eclectic and unhurried — where you can watch your food being prepared from your...
