I've heard stories and watched documentaries about Blue Bottle years ago, and the company struck me as an "ideal" cafe since it serves specialty coffee and has multiple locations around the world. However, that's not really the case anymore for me.
The Shinjuku branch's customers couldn't have been more disconnected from the baristas and the coffee let alone the farm that grew the coffee. The experience is highly commercialised and efficient which is great for high foot traffic, but not great for me.
Again, I think I'm a special kind of customer since I wanna know who's serving me the coffee. Granted, they did tell me about the coffee, but there was almost no room for chit chat.
Their set up literally felt like a castle since they have a long bar that surrounds them like a castle wall. They did really try to make small talk with me. I really wanted to continue the conversation, but the environment killed the mood.
If you just want coffee, this is the place. If you wanna talk with baristas, this is not the place.
Speaking of the coffee, I chose one from their Horizon Series. It showcases the Sitio San Roque farm from the Philippines with the label saying it has notes of strawberry, pineapple, and rose.
Upon recieving the cup, I mentally noted how hot it was to the touch, and I began to worry. But I pushed that aside and thought, "There must be a reason for this." And, indeed there was.
I was met with pleasant floral notes. Not too strong like Turkish ice cream but just enough to surprise me. A mild sweet fruity taste followed, and something just clicked. This tasted like an Ethiopian Yirgacheffe I had a while back. I don't want to make comparisons, but the "typical notes" of brown sugar and roasted nuts from Filipino coffee was nowhere to be found, and that blew my mind.
As it cooled down, the acidic and sweet notes began to open up more, and the floral notes went from in your face to a very mild aftertaste.
P.S. Ask for drip coffee. Apparently pourover is not a term in...

Upon entering, we were greeted by the inviting aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the warm ambiance of the café. The minimalist decor and attentive staff immediately set the tone for a memorable coffee experience.
My girlfriend opted for the Latte blend with oat milk, while I chose the drip coffee. Both selections surpassed our expectations. The Latte was smooth and creamy, with a perfect balance of richness from the blend and the subtle sweetness of oat milk. The drip coffee boasted a bold flavor profile, highlighting the nuanced notes of the carefully selected beans. It instantly woke me up.

Read moreMy experience at Blue Bottle Coffee was delightful as I ordered an iced americano for myself and the New Orleans for my wife. The iced americano had a light and balanced flavor profile that I enjoyed, opting for a more bitter taste over fruity and sour notes. The New Orleans, on the other hand, was a delightful blend of milky and sweet flavors that my wife absolutely loved.
The iced americano was refreshing and precisely what I needed for a pick-me-up, with its well-balanced flavors hitting just the right spot. The bitterness added a nice depth to the drink without overpowering the overall experience. It was evident that care was taken in preparing the drink to ensure a consistent and enjoyable taste.
As for the New Orleans, the combination of milky and sweet elements created a harmonious blend that was both comforting and indulgent. The sweetness was not overwhelming, allowing the unique flavors to shine through, making it a perfect treat for those with a sweet tooth.
Overall, Blue Bottle Coffee impressed us with their attention to detail in crafting these beverages. The quality of the coffee and the skill of the baristas were evident in each sip we took. If you appreciate well-crafted coffee with a focus on flavor and balance, Blue Bottle Coffee is definitely...
