¥25,000 shabu shabu tasting menu. Private room. Cute servers 🫶🏻. Calming instruments background music. Loud customers.
Here’s the lowdown: Sakura-Scented Sesame Tofu - 2/10 - Yeah, this one was a miss for me. Didn't quite get the hype. Seared Spanish Mackerel with Fragrant Ponzu Jelly - 8/10 - Solid. The mackerel was nicely done, and the ponzu jelly had a good kick. Steamed Egg Custard with Creamy Yuba (Tofu skin), Topped with Shark Fin Sauce - 8/10 (Wow factor: 10/10) - Okay, the shark fin thing was a first. Definitely a "whoa" moment. The custard and yuba combo was pretty interesting too. Wagyu Fillet Seared Sushi - 9/10 - Seriously tasty wagyu. Melty goodness. Though, gotta mention, the server did have a bit of a clumsy moment with the door. 😬 "Dashi-shabu" - Interesting - This was different from the usual hot pot vibe. Dipping in that dashi onion sauce was a new one, love it. Meh for the ponzu sauce for the wagyu. Brand pork - Loved it. Really good flavor. Snow crab - Meh. Didn't do much for me. Wagyu beef - Also just okay. Expected a bit more. Seasonal vegetables and mushrooms - Lol, it was one lonely mushroom. Not exactly a veggie feast Udon noodle and curry powder - 10/10 - Surprisingly good and super filling. Definitely hit the spot. Matcha Pudding - 11/10 - Seriously good. Really, really good. Could have eaten another one. Matcha - New experience - Traditional Japanese tea ceremony style. Definitely more bitter than the matcha I'm used to (usually with oat milk as matcha latte with fuck tons of syrup in the States). Glad the server gave those cute little rock candies though! Overall: Hyoki Shabu-shabu Akasaka had some definite highs, like that mackerel and the matcha pudding. The "Dashi-shabu" was an interesting take, and the pork was great. But some dishes just didn't quite land for me. A memorable meal with a few...

Thanks heavens! Amazing experience all around! Each dish thoughtfully presented and tasted incredible.
Very different Shabu Shabu experience from what we get back home, and the beef.. is to die for. The Wagyu was so incredible we decided to order the Kobe too, and gosh, it melts in your mouth.
