We came to Izumo in Ikebukuro during our lunch and arrived at 12p and we seem to be the first few here. They of course asked if we made reservations and said no. This is located in a small alley way but easy to find using google maps directions.
The bottom floor had some bar like seating and for people that smoke while eating. There are more seats in the back. The 2nd flr has a 6 person table, 3 tables for 4, and 2 tables for a couple. This place can be doable for groups if you can make a reservation online. The second floor is for non-smokers. We opted of course to eat upstairs.
They ask you to pick a set of chopsticks to pick your fortune and I got the ‘Good fortune’ paper to get a 5% discount. Yippee! My hubs got the ‘Uncertain luck’ while my bro-in-law got the ‘Small luck’.
We ordered: Sapporo Black Label Beer ¥545 / @$3.80 (good and cold) Avocado Yukke ¥590 / @$4 (good with raw yolk) Crystal Cumberland ¥490 / @$3.40 (the cucumbers were buried underneath and the crystal tasted like soft bones and was salty) Towering Eel and Egg beef bowl ¥3537 / @$24.70 Towering Eel and egg bowl ¥2890 / @$20
They even had some interesting food to eat like raw horse meat, smoked horse tongue! Ekk! They also had an appetizer called ‘Yakitsuki’ which was rice cracker coated with bone marrow but it looked like fish bones to me that are deep fried. No thanks!! Everything was good. Had a few small bones in the eel but nothing to worry about. Prices are a little pricing for me but this is their specialty. For eel lovers, this is the...
Read moreBIGGEST UNAGI DON in Tokyo‼️🚨
This hidden unagi specialty store in Ikebukuro offers a variety of eel dishes such as unagi skewers prepared in different styles, unagi omelette roll and several unagi rice combinations including their epic UNATAMADON weighing around 1.5kg (¥2750) that’s the absolutely photo-worthy too!
The mountain of rice cooked with unagi sauce is topped with a thick tamago (steamed omelette) and a huge fillet of scrumptiously soft unagi lathered in their special sweet-salty soy sauce whilst grilling . If you can’t finish the entire bowl, they’ll help wrap the remnants into an onigiri for you to take home.
I also tried 4 different delicious unagi skewers including kabayaki (dipped in their special sauce), shirayaki (unseasoned) and shioyaki (salt-grilled) plus another showered with loads of butter. All had delightfully crispy skin and moist flesh.
Do try the unagi omelette roll that’s packed with luscious umaminess in every mouthful from the juicy, soft omelette and unagi tucked in the middle

Read moreThe food was nice. I'm not a big eater myself, so I only ordered the smallest option available, which was without the tamagoyaki. The eel was of good quality and marinated perfectly, not under or overdone, the right flavour. The rice was also cooked properly, and made a divine combo with the eel on top. It came with a soup, which acted as a great palate cleanser. The side dishes also tasted fine. They're good to try if you're interested.
The atmosphere was proper, as was the case in most izakaya. I'd say it is a good place to chatter away with your friends or family.
The service was fine, I wasn't being serviced a lot anyway, since my interaction with the staff was limited. On top of that, the orders were made by scanning a QR code. For what little interaction we had, I did feel that they were pretty friendly and didn't feel unwelcome as a tourist.
Finally, the price was acceptable, considering the restaurant's location. I've definitely seen more expensive stuff in Ikebukuro. Overall, I'd say I have gotten the price's...
