We visited Moyan Curry Shinjuku with decent expectations. The food itself was fine nothing special, but not bad. However, the service really ruined the experience for me.
From the moment we arrived, the server acted like he didn’t want us there. We originally planned to order one curry and two appetizers, but the server told us we had to order one curry per person. So, we adjusted and ordered two curries and canceled the appetizers.
I don’t live in Japan, and while I understand Japanese fairly well, speaking it is harder for me. I clearly said in Japanese, “カレーを二つだけ、他のはいらない” (“Just two curries, we don’t need anything else”). Despite that, the server still brought the appetizers. When I told him again that we didn’t want them, he tried to charge us for them anyway. Only after I questioned the bill did he remove the charge.
Worst of all, I heard him complaining to someone else inside the restaurant saying I had ordered the appetizers and then changed my mind, which is not true. I also asked him (in English) if he spoke English, just in case it would help, but he didn’t respond at all also he didnt great us when coming to the restaurant which is rare in Japan no Thank you as well.
This was the first time I’ve ever experienced a rude service in Japan. I’m here on vacation and didn’t want to make a big deal, but I definitely won’t be coming back to this place. Very...
Read moreTiny little curry place (probably a normal size locally?). I randomly walked into this place and the selection of curry is pretty good. I got the dry curry and added cheese to it and it was not bad at all. For spiciness, you can choose spicy level 1-20, with 10 and above being for people who like spicy food. I got a 10 and it was spicy! which totally surprised because that's not what I expect out of Japanese spiciness! In any case, it was a good level for me; I wouldn't have gone any higher or lower because I don't like my Japanese curry to be spicy like when I eat a Thai drunken noodle dish. A bit of background about my spicy level: I normally get 8-15 (out of 10) spicy level at Thai restaurants in the States, depending on the dish and the restaurant itself.
I liked that they have a huge selection of comic books on the shelves just above where you're eating. I would have grabbed one to read if I knew how to read Japanese.
The lunch meal that I got came with free salad (or extra rice if you select that option) and access to a help-yourself station of pickled vegetables, boiled potatoes (limit 2 per person)...
Read moreThe place looked good and had a decent rating, so I went in. It was not that full, however the waiter ignored me and kept serving Japanese guests who came in after me first. I finally managed to order, the waiter was very reluctant to communicate even though I tried to use Japanese (Google translate) when I realized English is not an option for him, but even after 20 mins of waiting I was not served, not even the beer! In the meantime, Japanese guests that had arrived way after me were receiving their second course. There were other non-Japanese guests being ignored in the restaurant at the time. It just felt really rude. I cancelled my order and left. No idea about the quality of the food, since I never got to taste it. Overall a frustrating experience,...
