Tsurutontan Shinjuku — Restaurant in Tokyo

I came to TsuruTonTan in Shinjuku on a friend’s recommendation, and wow—this place completely exceeded my expectations!

First of all, the bowls are massive—like, seriously huge! I’ve never seen anything like it. But it’s not just about size—the udon noodles were insanely good: perfectly chewy and comforting. I tried the Mentaiko Cream Udon, and it was a mind-blowing mix of Japanese and Western flavors. Rich, savory, and super satisfying.

The vibe of the restaurant was sleek and modern, but still cozy. Even though there was a bit of a wait, the staff were friendly and efficient. Totally worth it.

I visited this place on July 2024 and overall the experience was not so great as expected. This place is located in the heart of Shinjuku district, just behind the Godzilla road. Despite it is located in a super touristic spot, this place did not have any menu in English and we had many issues in ordering dishes as the waiters were not able to understand or communicate properly in English. If you are an international tourist and looking for a restaurante I would suggest to avoid this place as you will get crazy in translating everything and order your meal. Food quality was a letdown as well, with noodles and nigiri made with non fresh ingredients. We paid with credit card (American Express) and this was actually the only plus of this place which accept electronic payments...

Delicious big bowls of udon - very interesting flavours and toppings! The price is a big higher than other places but worth it due to the portion size and atmosphere (there was some live jazz music playing when we were eating).

You can order the normal portion, or 1.5x, 2x or up to 3x for free! We both got double portions and they were so big, I have no idea how anyone would eat the 3x portion. Each udon portion is around 250g.

The udon itself is very nice, thick and delicious. Not too chewy and not too soft.

We stumbled upon this place before 7pm and there was a short line that moved relatively fast. Got seated within 10 mins. When we left the line was out the door and up the stairs!
