Disappointed - It was one of our first experiences dining in Japan and heard how friendly and hospitable people are there, so our expectations were high, maybe our fault. To sum things up, the young asian gentleman and older asian lady (my guess was the owner) were not very friendly and got impression did not care for tourist since it was not a tourist area but went there because it was across street from hotel/apt. we were staying and just wanted something light and quick . Did not feel welcome there, even tried to start a conversation by apologizing for my poor Japanese, gentleman didn't seem interested. Real kicker was I ordered their special breakfast but my wife and daughter decided they wanted something across street instead. They came back with their food, just some small items in a bag, and joined me at counter, and purchased about $18 worth of drinks. We all sat down outside in terrace at a table and waited for my order. We were the only customers btw. Gentleman brought my order to our table and immediately stated somewhat insistently, "Your not going to eat that here are you pointing to the bag of food my wife and daughter had gotten across street? You cannot eat that here." Wow. Frankly, we did not respond since we were so surprised by his question/insinuation. We had just made a $25 purchase from this small local sidewalk cafe, not as if it was some expensive sit down place. I get that some places do not allow outside food but most will allow if you make a purchase from them. We felt insulted and somewhat embarrassed. Yes, not a big deal to have my family watch me as I ate alone but needless to say we were anxious to leave this cafe to enjoy the rest of our first day in Tokyo. Very disappointed, unexpected, and bothered. In fairness, the breakfast special was fresh with no complaints, but it was just one egg, toast and fruit. Could have been just a local place catering to locals only, maybe my poor Japanese insulted them, not sure what happened to prompt such an unfriendly experience. Fortunately, the rest of our dining experiences were just what we expected - Friendly, welcoming, attentive, enjoyable, truly Japanese! New Zealand Cafe? Not...
Read moreWe went in today as I felt like a coffee. After I ordered and paid, we were told that my partner also had to order something as the store policy was 1 person, 1 drink. If the store had been crowded I would have understood, but there was only 1 other person there. If you are going to have arbitary policies like this (that are definitely not kiwi) then they should be communicated...
Read moreBeing a Kiwi makes me a good judge for a so called “New Zealand cafe”. Coffees were just above average. You only got two options for breakfast. We got sausage and eggs. There was only one supermarket sausage and one egg and a roll bread on the plate. There are handkerchiefs on the bench but your not allowed to touch! Are you...
