I am writing this as a Thai knowing that the brand Jim Thompson comes from Thailand directly; in a word, this is quite disappointing.

I came for the lunch time; paying 1650 yen (about 16 USD) for one main dish and a small buffet line.

The main dish I ordered was a very basic and simple dish called "Gaprao Gai Kaidao" or stir-fried minced chicken and holy basil (not Thai sweet basil that many YouTubers tend to get confused) with Thai-style fried egg".

The Gaprao was okay-ish. The main problem was that it is named "Gaprao" (holy basil) because holy basil is the main herb in the dish but here you can barely find any of these leaves; dominated by the onion. I personally don't mind onion in Gaprao although not a fan of it but I should warn you that this could cause a war in Thailand as much as pineapple on pizza in Italy. Normally, Gaprao composes only of the meat, garlic, chilli (dry + fresh can also put in some pepper) and holy basil; nothing else. So, putting other veggies like onion, carrot, long green beans, baby corn, and so on is usually considered a food crime in Thailand.

Now, for the egg. Come on, this is not a Thai fried egg which has very crispy egg white and running yolk. This was more like a western style sunnyside egg.

As for the buffet line, there's no saving grace here. The Somtum or Thai spicy green papaya salad was a mess. First, it wasn't spicy at all. Second, it was radish not green papaya! (I could go on to the minor details like unroasted peanuts and such but nevermind.) Frankly, this is not Somtum. The taste of the radish itself is fundamentally different from green papaya, not to mention it's overwhelmingly watery texture.

The Tomyum Kung or spicy and sour shrimp soup was even worse. The soup was like simply putting "Knorr Tomyum Flavour" in and then done. The shrimps were so freaking small and not so fresh. I remembered seeing a similar kind in Lawson100 (100 yen supermarket in Japan). I don't think it was the same brand or sources but definitely the same grade. Tomyum Kung was used to name the economic crisis in Thailand and SEA in 1997, here it depicted the crisis of this restaurant as well.

The egg and tofu was the worst. Don't touch it. This isn't a comment but a warning. Swallow it down the throat was a challenge in and of itself. Terrible, indeed. How dare they sell this!

The only edible thing I have from the buffet - like wasn't a challenge to eat and finish - was the grilled chicken. The marinade was good and on point but the chicken was so damn dried and dying on the buffet line.

All in all, I would not do a buffet if it at this low quality. Focusing on the main dish and lower the price tag (cutting from the buffet cost) should be better since the freshly made dish was at least on an "edible" level.

ps. One last thing, if I could give any constructive criticism, I would say that the restaurant doesn't understand (Thai) food well. Different food has different sensitivity to "time". Some food can sit quite long and well in the buffet line but some don't. Here is why I think the restaurant doesn't understand food.

They put time resilient food (can be sit around for a long time) in the a la carte freshly cook menu like Gaprao, curries, chicken rice and so on. But put dishes that are needed to consume freshly after cooking (highly time sensitive) like Somtum, Grilled Chicken, and Tomyum on the buffet line. I think they should rethink this; like swapping green curry or Tom Kah Gai to the buffet and Tomyum to the a la carte menu,...

"Recommended when you want to enjoy Thai food in a casual and atmospheric place"

Jim Thompson's Table in Thailand Ginza is a Thai Department of Commerce 'Thai Select' certified restaurant. The location is at "Marronnier Gate" near Yurakucho Station. The interior is surrounded by Thai silk and has a calm atmosphere. It is a little expensive for Thai food, but you can enjoy the atmosphere. I had the main course, soup, and meal which I could choose what I like, and I especially recommend the green curry of young chicken with creamy taste and moderate spiciness. The platter of 3 appetizers and plates were wonderful and the taste was delicious. The Tom Yum soup with head-on shrimp is tasty spicy. The seats are a little small and noisy, but My recommend this restaurant when you want to eat Thai food while enjoying the...

Waited 1 hour in line for lunch on a weekend--my fault for not making a reservation. However, for the entire hour I was there, they never replaced the green curry even though the buffet time was only half over, which felt cheap to me. Other than that, the food I did eat was flavorful and good, so I recommend this place with the serious caveat of making a reservation...
