I’m really glad I decided to try Rangitoto Tokyo because honestly, this place blew me away in such a calm, understated way. It’s tucked away in a quiet basement, so at first I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the moment I stepped in I felt like I discovered one of those true hidden gems only locals know about.
The atmosphere was so cozy and intimate. There’s only about 20 seats, so it instantly felt personal — like having dinner at a friend’s place rather than a restaurant. The staff were incredibly warm and friendly, especially Wayne (the owner and sommelier), who took his time explaining all the New Zealand wines and made some amazing recommendations. I really appreciated how relaxed everything felt — zero pretentiousness, just good food, good wine, and great company.
The food itself was next level. Every dish had this perfect balance between Japanese finesse and French comfort, with some fantastic New Zealand flavors woven in. The salmon with avocado and quail egg was delicate and fresh, and the roast lamb — wow, that was easily one of the best lamb dishes I’ve had in Japan. The flavors just worked. Everything felt crafted with care, but nothing was over the top or showy. It was just right.
I went for the tasting menu and honestly, for the quality and the experience, it felt like a bargain. I left full, happy, and already thinking about when I could come back. It’s the kind of place where the menu changes, so there’s always a reason to return.
If you love wine and want something very personal and a little different from the usual Tokyo dining spots, Rangitoto Tokyo is a must. It felt more like an experience than just a meal — very special and memorable.

The amazing food, the extensive wine list, and the cozy-yet-modern atmosphere make this the perfect place for first dates and anniversaries alike. At the same time, the reasonable prices make this the perfect place to grab dinner and drinks when you don't have other plans.
If you find yourself here alone, the welcoming owner will do his best to make you laugh, and teach you a thing or two about wine while he's at it. His pride in hospitality is unparalleled in Tokyo.
Regardless, he will also gladly help you pick the perfect wine(s) for your meal - to include vintages that are not available anywhere else in Japan. A similar (but lesser) experience will cost ~3x the price anywhere else in the city.

The expertise Wayne brings with his wine and sake knowledge is exceptional. His ability to make you feel like you’re drinking something very special whilst simultaneously removing a lot of the pretentiousness is unparalleled.
The chef’s subtle western twist on classic Japanese cuisine is a delight. It’s nestled in a lovely little back street not far from Akihabara which is close to everything but conveys the feeling of being out of the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.
It provides a fine dining experience whilst simultaneously feeling like you’re in an intimate space with a friend serving you.
