Writing this long review since I have time after ending my night prematurely, thanks to my experience in a World’s Top 50 bar on my last day in Tokyo. After visiting a few bars as a solo drinker, this would be the top in terms of worst experience.
I joined the queue as the second in line, and requested for a table for one. I was handed a menu and the first group went in shortly. I was asked to order a drink. The SG Club has a really extensive menu of Christmas-themed drinks which is cool and takes time to read so I was shocked when I was quickly asked to decide on one. The staff spoke good English and recommended me a warm cocktail based on my preference. All along, I thought this was a preorder to speed up the seating of guests later.
They brought out my drink and I actually thought it was a sample or something. To my dismay, that was the cue for me to start drinking outside the entrance, on the same table as where the menus are placed for perusing. I was perturbed by this whole thing, so were the people lining behind me, as they pointed to my drink and said they don’t want to drink it now when asked to order. I wouldn’t too if I knew that was the intention.
The guests made the right decision as they went in shortly while I remained outside with my drink almost done (the warm cocktail was quickly turning cold). The staff then invited me to stand inside the bar to hopefully wait for an opening for the bar seat, and I relented. At this point, 3 pairs behind me were already seated.
I was placed standing by the door and I thought the night couldn’t get any worse. I had to make way for people leaving and new guests entering (kinda like a slap in your face) and it was such an awkward place to be. They cleared my empty cup and after a while, the staff approached me for a second drink. I said I’d prefer not now as I’m standing by the door. I don’t think that’s worth paying for, given the premium prices charged. This whole ordeal took around 45 mins while the couple, who was queuing behind me, had finished their drink at an assigned table and left.
I was handed the receipt as a signal that they couldn’t do anything else for me. I expressed my disappointment to the staff that all I would like is to experience a bar properly and not with this kind of arrangement. I would be able to wait and have a second drink but at that point, all the vibes of being in the bar was gone. Better thought could be placed in arranging the guests. I understand that they can’t chase the guests but if they could move groups of 3-4 from standing to a table, place pairs by the bar, I don’t see why it’s not possible to accommodate a solo drinker. Besides, a glass of water and menu (without the intention to order a drink instantaneously) could be offered to a guest who’s uncomfortable. After all, we’re all paying guests and would like a nice experience at the bar.
Upon hearing my explanation, the staff waived my drink out of goodwill and once again asked me to visit another day (I reminded her that I’ve already told her in our conversation earlier that I would be leaving tomorrow, so…maybe next time when tickets to Tokyo get cheaper.)
tl,dr; avoid this bar unless they have changed their seating policy or if you are not drinking...

Having frequented the downstairs "Sip" lounge with my wife, we found ourselves captivated by the blend of ambiance, flavor, and artistry that defines this esteemed establishment. Eager to explore further, we anticipate our return to indulge in the myriad experiences the SG Club has to offer.
Founded by the illustrious Shingo Gokan, SG Group stands as a beacon of innovation within the realm of bar culture. Gokan's stellar reputation, underscored by victories at prestigious competitions such as the Bacardi Legacy and "International Bartender of the Year," positions him as a luminary in the global bartending community.
As we immersed ourselves in the SG Club's narrative, inspired by the journeys of samurai envoys and the golden age of cocktails in America, we were struck by its seamless fusion of Japanese and Western styles. This harmony is eloquently expressed through the contrasting atmospheres of Sip and Guzzle, each offering a unique interpretation of cocktail culture.
On the first floor, Guzzle invites patrons to partake in casual drinking amidst a comfortable, vintage-inspired setting. Here, an extensive menu of cocktails, including non-alcoholic mocktails and takeaway options, ensures that every palate is catered to with finesse.
Descending into the underground Sip lounge, we were transported to an era reminiscent of a New York gang club, with Japanese motifs adding an air of intrigue to the ambiance. Cocktails, crafted with meticulous attention to detail, tantalized our taste buds with complex flavor combinations reminiscent of fine dining experiences. The presence of a classic shoe shine booth added a touch of nostalgia, inviting us to savor each moment.

Read moreAlmost hidden away within the vibrant labyrinth of Shibuya, Tokyo, the SG Club is akin to discovering an elusive vinyl record in a thrift shop - unexpected, yet oh so delightful.
This isn't your average watering hole. The SG Club is a two-tiered homage to the art of mixology. Upstairs, you'll find 'Sip', a laid-back space for enjoying a casual drink. But the real enchantment, my friend, lies below.
Venture down the staircase and you'll uncover 'Guzzle'. Don't be misled by the name. This isn't a place for hurriedly downing drinks. Guzzle is a speakeasy-style bar that exudes exclusivity like a secret handshake. It's as if you've stepped into a time machine, transporting you back to the Prohibition era, sans the actual prohibition, naturally.
The cocktails here, oh, the cocktails! They're akin to symphonies served in a glass. Each one is a harmonious blend of flavors, a testament to the bartender's craft. Whether you're a fan of the classics or in the mood for something adventurous, the menu has got you covered. And if you're feeling indecisive, just ask the bartender. They're like cocktail wizards, conjuring up drinks that are just right for your palate.
But what truly sets the SG Club apart is the service. The staff here aren't just servers; they're hosts. From the moment you step in, you're treated like a guest, not a customer. They're attentive without being intrusive, always ready with a recommendation or a friendly chat. It's the kind of service that makes you feel like a regular, even if it's your first visit.
So, if you find yourself in Shibuya and in need of a drink, do give the SG Club a visit. Yes, it might be a bit hidden, but isn't that part of the charm? After all, the best things in life are worth searching for. Just remember to bring your sense of adventure - and perhaps your sense of direction, too.
The SG Club is more than just a bar. It's a journey into the heart of cocktail craftsmanship, a place where every drink tells a story, and every sip is a chapter. It's a place where the past and present collide in a delightful dance of flavors. And it's a place that, once visited, will linger in your memory, like a melody that you can't quite shake off. So here's to the SG Club - a hidden gem that's well...
