We visited this restaurant in Shibuya around 1:30 PM on a weekday during our family trip to Tokyo. There was no wait to get in, and even by the time we finished our meal, the restaurant wasn’t particularly busy. However, from the moment we entered, everything required an unreasonable amount of waiting—waiting to receive an English menu, waiting to place our order, waiting for the first dish to arrive, waiting again for someone to come cook it at the table, waiting for the second menus to come out and waiting for someone to cook it. Not a single part of the dining process happened without delay.
Our server, a blond-haired male who seemed to also be acting as the host, appeared not particularly concerned about the delays. Even when we tried to get someone’s attention, we were ignored or met with indifference as he went about his tasks without urgency. It felt as though our presence and need for assistance were simply not a priority.
As tourists who needed to communicate in English, we also found the lack of support disappointing. No one made an effort to help us understand the process or explain anything in a way we could follow. Staff spoke in brief Japanese phrases or offered no explanation at all, which made our first monjayaki experience confusing and frustrating.
We had ordered three dishes, but after waiting for over an hour and a half while only two of them were cooked at our table, we simply couldn’t wait any longer and had to leave before the third dish was prepared. When we explained this to our server while paying—mentioning that the excessive wait time forced us to leave without finishing our meal—there was no acknowledgment or even a basic apology. While the food itself wasn’t bad, the poor service and lack of customer care made the entire experience extremely disappointing. We would never return or recommend this place to others. Furthermore, visiting this restaurant was the worst experience during the whole travel of...
Read moreI'd stay away if you don't at least speak Japanese. The most racist experience I've had during my entire trip in Tokyo. For reference we were 3 English and Chinese speaking girls.
They had an English menu but didn't give it to us even though they realized we didn't speak Japanese (we didn’t know and it was only after taking too long to understand our order did they give one). Our server never showed up after taking the order. A bunch of different servers would come in intervals to mix the monjayaki but since it was our first time we didn't know what was happening and when we could eat and they would just do the work and leave. The grill was also dirty with leftover food. They kept ignoring us when we tried to ask questions. Gave us something we didn't order and when we tried to ask what they put on our table, every single server making eye contact ignored us. When we could finally get someone to listen to us, the staff that took it away was visibly annoyed with us. This one server even tried to gaslight us by saying we did order the okonomiyaki when we didn't (this was a purely monjayaki experience). It wasn’t until he finally went to check our order that he took the okonomiyaki away. They kept staring at us and wanted us to leave but hadn't even given us the icecream we ordered despite telling them three times we still had an icecream order left.
The only positive was the staff named YUKI. The only person to treat us with kindness. He voluntarily went over each item on the receipt with us since we were concerned that we were overcharged given everything that had transpired.
Rules to note if you still want to eat here:
SALTY!!!!!!!!!! I’VE NEVER EVER HAD SUCH SALTY FOOD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. DID YOU REALLY MAKE THE FOOD FOR THE CUSTOMERS?
We ordered a Monjayaki with spicy cod and mochi and a Monjayaki with squid ink. There are a lot of things to say, but I gotta start with the saltiness. It was too salty so I asked the staff if they can help us. Then they gave us a bowl of cream. It was not enough 😂 so we got a second bowl of cream Even though we mixed two bowls of cream into the Monjayaki with squid ink, it was still so salty that we couldn’t even eat it at all. (** the third picture is of the food we couldn’t eat)
Plus there are more reasons I won’t recommend this restaurant:
We needed to wait outside in a queue for more than 30mins to enter the restaurant. They said they will call out queue number only in Japanese, not English. Which means that if I couldn’t notice that they called my number in Japanese, I would miss it. (But some really kind customers helped us get in) As you can see in the fourth picture, the barbecue where they cook the food in front of us was dirty. Before we entered, they suddenly showed us a paper which said we were forced to order and pay for an entree. (We didn’t have a choice) In addition, we needed to pay a seating fee 😂 there were table charges (380yen per each person) Ah one more thing. When we said to the staff that the food was too salty, the staff asked if it’s okay for him to try. After he tried it, he told us that is standard Japanese food taste. WE PUT TWO BOWLS OF CREAM HAHA. Then what about before? Also after a few minutes, there was another table that was complaining about the same food. 😂
I had to drink 2 bottles of water in a row . Please cook food that...
