Since Mercado closed, this may be the only Mexican restaurant in the city if I'm not mistaken. Located on the roof of Sarit Mall along with a number of other restaurants, the location is pretty nice when the sun is shining. Plenty of craft breweries to have a drink at afterwards if you so desire it.
I went for the lamb taco and the chorizo and potato enchilada. Both pretty good. If I had known it was "buy 2 tacos, get one free" Monday I would have done that, but I didn't see the special in time. The food came out fairly fast considering I arrived at opening time. It came with four different sauces and I also ordered some refried beans to go with it.
I was hoping to get a stout craft beer I had seen people posting about here in the past but they no longer serve craft beers. I then tried to get a horchata but it wasn't ready yet as they had just opened. Instead I got a passion-orange drink which was perfectly fine. For dessert I ordered a choco flan (the only dessert available at the time) which was very nice and fortunately for me was sweet but definitely not overly sweet.
Overall, it's pretty good. I recommend coming here later in the afternoon or early evening when everything is prepared and there is probably more of an atmosphere. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and they play appropriate music to make you feel like you're in Mexico.
I'll definitely come back some time to try more of their dishes. Well worth a try if you're here in Nairobi and either want to try something new or just get your Mexican food fix....
Read moreWent to the location in Sarit. Enjoyed everything about the experience. I like eating outdoors when possible and there was a nice shady part outside. The service was on point. Prompt but not overbearing or pushy.
I ordered the chicken burrito and a flavored water. I believe it was hibiscus. Burrito was large, filling and delicious. It wasn't the best burrito I've ever had but no complaints.
The best part was the price. Meal came to about $11. Kept me full all day.
The pics don't do the burrito justice. It was much better than the photos suggested.
Update.
I received a reply from the good peeps at Fonda Taqueria. The restaurant asked was there anything that could have made the experience better.
Let me restate that I enjoyed the meal. It was a good burrito. Part of the reason behind my review of the burrito is based on burritos I've had in California, Texas, Spain. I'm more used to... and a fan of the "stuffed" burrito. I mean, the burritos there are large, double wrapped tortilla so all the fixings stay nicely packed. I'm getting used to the fact that portions outside the U.S. are simply smaller. And that isn't a bad thing. Those larger portions in the states probably explains part of the obesity problem in the U.S.
Perhaps I'll just head back to Fonda's and sample another variety. I'll go for the beef or pork...
Read moreSo Fonda seems all about the sauces so it’s an unusual Mexican restaurant. It’s not about ordering tacos, or enchiladas or burritos, but ordering, say, an enchilada, but pick a sauce (and flavour) for that enchilada. But of course you ask, what exactly does that sauce taste like? An interesting experience! So my wife and I were bold enough to try the specialty, she chicken, me pork, with two different sauces (chocolate and cinnamon resp.)
Nice flavours from the sauces, but that was all. Both our meats were well over cooked. Too dry and had not enfused much of the flavour from the sauces. So not that enjoyable really. Served with “Mexican rice” which was rather cold and not the usual strong Mexican spiced taste. The fried beans though were great.
But most disappointing was the price of the wine. 3500ksh and up. However, BYO corkage 1000ksh. So I recommend bring your own.
Overall, not bad experience. But needs to improve its cooking otherwise this restaurant will be an initial fad and fade into obscurity. I might try it again...
