Tabu Tea House — Restaurant in Riga

Got overcharged (€7 instead of €6.50). When this was raised, there was no apology and only weird excuses. Be that as it may, even if it was a genuine mistake, the service was substandard; we waited for the 2 coffees for a long time, when we chased the coffees up, the same member of staff as above, was talking on her phone on loudspeaker complaining to (presumably) a colleague of hers, that she was not coping due to workload.

In all of this, after another customer complained about the lack of toilet paper in the toilet, the said member of staff, again gave no apologies and after dealing with the toilet, went straight to making drinks without washing hands.

When an additional member of staff arrived, the service deteriorated even further; there was no hint of effort to resolve the long wait and after running her hand over her nose, we observed her grabbing a take-away paper cup (with fingers touching the inside of the cup) and making drinks.

In the end, due to the long wait, we had to ask to be served in take-away cups. And needless to say, we were so appalled by the standards of hygiene, that the cups of coffee went straight to the bin...

If I was friendly, I'd say that the place was understaffed with only one guy, who for some reason couldn't manage the place alone and/or had a bad day.

That said, I have to say I received a absolutely bitter undrinkable mess for a tea after him verbally stumbling around for a recommendation of a herbal tea. When I confronted him about the bitter tea, he just said that this might happen when it infuses too long. My response that he just brought it 2 minutes ago he just countered with an "oh". I was offered a new one, to which I agreed and made sure it was a different and not as bitter one.

What can I say: the second one was not as bad as the first one, but way too bitter as well (despite immediately pouring it like the first one). My gf who is way more into tea (and it's intricacies) agreed, that it was indeed, well, badly prepared. In fairness: Her tea as well as the cake was quite good.

Still: this is not a café which does shakes, bubble tea, 166 blends of coffee and a bit tea on the side, this is supposed to be a specialized location, which I...

So I come here almost everyday to work on my book and some work related stuff. I really enjoy everything about this place. Their tea selection is amazing, the atmosphere and cakes are great. Although, I must say that it’s the best to come when the blue haired girl (I think her name is Maya) is working. She is very helpful, service is always nice whenever she is working there. Her plates come decorated and she always knows what to suggest to drink.

Also, because the baristas work here alone, I suggest to all the other customers to help bring down the dishes after your stay 😌🍵
