Location & Atmosphere: Nestled right in the heart of Kimberley Street Night Market, this bustling coffee shop is a prime spot for soaking up Penang’s lively street food scene. The place is packed with locals and tourists, creating a vibrant, chaotic energy perfect for people-watching while you eat. Plastic stools, shared tables, and the constant sizzle of woks set the scene—this is as authentic as it gets.
Food Highlights (Hit & Miss): ✔ Chee Cheong Fun (Fresh & Good) – Silky smooth rice rolls with a well-balanced sauce, made fresh to order. ✔ Roasted Duck (Solid Choice) – Tender, flavorful, and worth trying. One of the better options here. ✖ Char Kuay Teow (Just OK) – Decent wok hei but lacked the punch of Penang’s best versions. ✖ Oyster Omelette (Average) – A bit too starchy, with underwhelming oysters.
Hygiene & Service: Let’s be real—this is a no-frills, open-air hawker spot, so don’t expect pristine conditions. Wobbly tables, quick but no-nonsense service, and the occasional stray plastic bag blowing by. If you’re squeamish, this might not be for you.
Verdict: ⭐⭐⭐ (3/5) – Good for atmosphere, not for perfection. Come for the lively night market vibe, stick to the duck and Chee Cheong Fun, and keep expectations in check.
Tip: Bring cash, arrive early to avoid the worst crowds, and maybe pack...
Read moreExpensive and simply not good. See my photos ( I shall explain dish by dish). Yes ,you want to make money out of tourists but please for goodness sake cook your bloody food properly with pride and finesse especially your local popularities and not disgrace yourselves or your beautiful country's reputation with your below sub par standards. What's good use for good service with lousy food?
Char Kway Teow Portion is a serious joke with funny xtra ingredients with an unjustified price tag WITHOUT the wok hei.
Satay Just look at that cheating piece of blood clogging fat in between the mutton pieces..SERIOUSLY? peanut sauce is diluted. Meat is not seasoned to flavour enough. Char grilled fragrance also lacking.
Fried oyster with egg I have tasted better standards back home in SG.
Kway teow soup That's the only saving grace.
The many reviews I've seen and read praising the food taste and all that..obviously the taste buds of these reviewers doesn't know what true and authentic penang food is all about. Sorry but this place is off my list. Will return to try the lor bak and kway chap just to conclude...
Read moreThis coffee shop has long operating hours. It houses several hawker stalls, some open in the morning, some in the afternoon and the rest in the evening. The old and run down coffee shop even has a cracked and uneven floor which even the tables are slanted. I have been there to try the economy rice in the afternoon, and laksa, oo jian and the Mee goreng in the evening. The economy rice has nice dishes. I kinda like the salted fish curry which has a lot of taupok. I wouldn't say the economy rice is cheap, I knew a few stalls which charge lesser for the same amount of food I took. But nevertheless it's not too expensive. I'm also given soup of day with my economy rice.
The laksa in the evening is nice too. Mee goreng stall is operated by an Indian uncle. He is friendly and I kinda like his bee hoon goreng.
A little mention of the Chee Cheung Fun. It's a roadside stall that operates in the evening. The rice flour skin is so damn smooth and soft, with good fillings inside. One of the best Chee Cheung Fun I have had in Penang.
Parking is limited, but usually can be found along...
