1 Person Curry Fish Head + 1 Plate of White Rice = RM32.00
If you have been reading Food Blogs about JB, the name "Kam Long" should not be unfamiliar to you as it is a very popular shop for Singaporeans going for their Curry Fish Head fix.
This Shop i'm reviewing is unfortunately named "Kim Loong", so many people may actually tend to dismiss it as a Kam Long Knockoff Pretender. This is a HUGE Mistake! Kim Loong is actually a Real Hidden Gem, and in some ways may arguably be even better than the more Famous Kam Long!
The first thing that I noticed was the very Elderly Uncle sitting right at the front of the shop scaling Fish Heads. (as you can see in the Photo). He's very Friendly and Adorable. There are actually quite a few customers within, and are mostly Elderly and more Senior folks. This perked me up, because 姜还是老的辣, perhaps the Older Folks know which is the better place to eat? The Whole Place has a very Thick and Rich Beautiful Fish Curry Smell that permeates everything.
Priced at RM32.00 with a Plate of Rice, this is roughly the same price as Kam Long's similar sized one. The Whole Claypot is generously chocked full of Fried Beancurd Skins, Lady Fingers and a Whole Assortment of other Veggies that you'd typically find in a Curry Fishhead Claypot. Very Generous Servings and I reckon the Portion may be enough for 2 Eaters.
The Fish Head itself is Half a Fish Head and I couldn't tell what Fish this was. Its definitely not Barramundi that Kam Long uses. More importantly, the Fish Meat here tastes VERY CLEAN compared to Kam Long. I'm not kidding, when I tasted Kam Long in my past review, I mentioned that there is a Strong 鱼腥 Fishy Taste that I detected, but the Fish Head here is SUPER CLEAN and has ZERO Fishy Taste!
The Fish Meat for this particular Fish is Soft, Fresh and Tender. Throughout the Meal I really tasted No 鱼腥 Fishy Taste at all. The Curry is Watery, but still Very Rich and Creamy and I feel that it may have a Stronger Spicier Bite compared to Kam Long.
Heck, I wasn't even that hungry before I ate this, yet this Dish managed to perk up my appetite. There were some reports of Mosquitos in Kim Loong on Google Maps, but this was not a problem when I was there.
After chit-chatting with the Friendly Owners, so apparently Kam Long and Kim Loong were somehow related in the past. Due to some falling out and the splitting of house, they went their seperate ways. Kam Long has since lasted for 20+ Years, and Kim Loong for 15+ Years. I don't know if this story is true, but the Quality of this Dish I ate don't tell lies.
Really I feel Kim Loong Definitely 不会输给 Kam Long at all. Definitely give them a chance, you will not be disappointed. I feel this is just as good, if not may even be better than Kam Long!
This is a Real Hidden Gem. Highly Recommended, 2 Thumbs Up, Way Up!

Read moreInitially wanted to eat lunch at the other famous fish head curry in one of the shop houses behind. We were there around 11am but already was informed that the expected waiting time is around 2 hours. That's crazy! While walking past this shop, we saw they serves fish head curry too. Friendly uncle who was manning the shop front told us to give it a try. As there were few empty tables, we decided to give it a try. Waiting time for the food is about 20mins, I think. But we were comfortably seated with our drinks served. Surrounding is well ventilated. So overall waiting experience is reasonably comfortable. Medium size fish head curry (40RM) serves 2 adults and 1 teenager. Fish meat is enough though the fish head is not as big as I had expected. Another wow factor is that they don't stinge on the other ingredients. Plenty of vegetables and bean curd skin. The curry is darn "lemak" - coconut infused gravy. Overall, we had nice service and darn good food. We'll be...
