I recently embarked on a two-hour culinary adventure to savor the much-talked-about dishes at Warung Roti Canal in Bukit Chagar. Let me tell you, it was a journey well worth the effort!
Warung Roti Canal is renowned for its Roti Canal, and I can wholeheartedly confirm the hype. The roti canal here is a crispy delight, and what sets it apart is that it's not excessively oily. Each bite was a delightful crunch, and the balance in its texture was impressive.
But the magic doesn't stop at the roti alone. What makes the experience even more remarkable is the accompanying curry. This curry is a true standout – rich, fragrant, and incredibly tasty. The flavors complemented the roti perfectly, making it an absolute treat for the taste buds.
To add more excitement to my meal, I also ordered their Nasi Lemak. At first glance, it appeared to be a simple dish, but appearances can be deceiving. The taste of their Nasi Lemak was extraordinary, surpassing my expectations. The coconut-infused rice was wonderfully fragrant, the sambal packed a punch, and the condiments were fresh. This Nasi Lemak was in a league of its own, surpassing many others I've tried before.
I must admit that the journey to Bukit Chagar was quite a trek for me, but after experiencing the incredible flavors at Warung Roti Canal, I can confidently say it was more than worthwhile. The combination of the crispy Roti Canal and the exquisite Nasi Lemak has left a lasting impression on me.
So, if you're a food enthusiast or someone looking for an unforgettable culinary adventure, I wholeheartedly encourage you to plan a trip to Warung Roti Canal. The taste is something that's best experienced firsthand, and I guarantee you won't be disappointed. Make the effort, and you'll find that this journey is a delightful one for...
Read moreI have no idea what's the hype about this place. Thinking that a long queue signals good food so its worth the wait; this place defies that rule.
Let's start off with the "star" of the place, the "roti canai". If any true M'sian knew what a proper piece of roti canai is suppose to be like, this place does exactly opposite of that. The dough was tough to start with, flatten and stretched with no skill, filled with holes during the process, badly pressed into shape and off to the mildly heated griddle, constantly drenched in oil, shallow frying even and more oil to submerge it. The product of such carelessness? Crusty, tough, dense and oily flat bread that is falsely advertised as roti canai. Curries to go with the roti? Just one, so it's curry, singular. Nothing more than just warm water with some legumes in it, unless my interpretation of gravy or dhal curry was wrong for all my life. The 1 ringgit price tag doesn't justify this atrocity. So besides the "roti canai", the M'sian staple nasi lemak is served as well. Nothing but a typical plate of coconut rice lacking the fried anchovies and peanuts thus further reducing the allure of such a common staple. Drinks were managed by another vendor and again nothing great about it, lacking the milky, creamy goodness due to the reluctantness of adding a bit more of ingredients. The ambience was nothing great either. Place was understaffed, packed and ignored mostly. Self service is a must, but plates and utensils run out all the time, making it excruciatingly slow to even start eating. So if you have time and appetite to waste, this is the place to be. It is really hard to understand how people would rate this place...

The whole place smells very nice. I was there on a Tuesday Morning at 9am and there were quite a few people but I was lucky to still be able to find a Seat.
That said, unless you're driving or taking Grab here, it is actually quite difficult to walk here from CIQ. There are no proper pedestrian paths (as is most of JB) and you have to jaywalk some very dangerous and busy roads and a not very steep but noticeable hill to climb.
There is also one important critique I have about this place. Many comments describe this place as Friendly and Easy to Order. This is probably the case if you are able to speak Fluent Malay or is a Regular here.
For me as a Singaporean Chinese however, the Locals that man this place don't really feel very friendly even when I try my best to be as friendly as I could and speak in my Broken Malay.
They never smiled and gave a suspicious, and even a little hostile stare. I swear I didn't do anything disrespectful. My guess is they probably wasn't happy when I took my phone to take a photo of their menu.
My advice is if you want to eat at this place, you must either be Very Fluent in Malay or be very Thick-Skinned. While the meal was certainly delicious, I felt a little uneasy when ordering. Didn't want to stay longer and quickly moved off after my meal.
