You could walk past a dozen times and not notice it—there’s no flashy sign. Just a dark corner, a row of plastic tables, and the smell of frying dough and curry. Welcome to breakfast, or supper, Malaysian-style. For four decades, Mansion Tea Stall has lurked in the heart of Masjid India, pigeons and all—the sort of place the locals treat like a favourite old pair of shoes: comfortable, familiar, impossible to give up.
The menu is simple, the prices absurdly low, and the dishes are unapologetically messy. The star attraction is the Roti Special—a humble roti canai chopped into bite-sized pieces, drenched in dhal and curry, topped with two soft-boiled eggs and a spoonful of sambal. It’s sweet, runny, spicy, and slightly ridiculous. One bite and you’re knee-deep in what locals jokingly call Roti Muntah Kuching, or “Cat’s Vomit Roti.” Don’t think about the name. Just eat it.
The Roti Sardin deserves a mention, too. Flaky, lightly charred, stuffed with sardines and onions cooked just enough to let their sweetness shine without turning the bread soggy. It’s comfort food, the kind that reminds you of simpler times—if those times involved a minor risk of curry splatter on your shirt. Even the plain Roti Canai is respectable: soft, flaky, slightly charred, all the things a good roti should be. Though it’s no masterpiece, it hits the right notes.
Drinks are a similar story. The Teh Tarik is surprisingly balanced—frothy, creamy, and not too sweet. It’s worth ordering even if nothing else catches your eye. The iced version is a lifesaver in KL’s heat. Staff move like clockwork through a constantly full dining area, taking orders, serving food, and topping up sambal without pause. Seating is shared with a neighbouring stall, so brace yourself for elbowing strangers in and out of tables. Cash only. It’s 2025, but some traditions are sacred.
The food isn’t flawless. The sweetness of the curries leans heavy for some palates, and roti can be served cold if it’s been sitting too long. Expect the environment to be less than pristine. Floors are grimy, pigeons are bold, and hygiene is questionable if you’re the type who notices these things. But if you can look past that, you’ll find authenticity in every bite.
The crowd reads like a who’s who of KL: postmen, office rats, night wanderers—all here for the curry-soaked bread. Tourists show up and either love it or leave muttering about cold eggs and sweet dhal. The beauty of Mansion Tea Stall is that it doesn’t try to impress—it is the blueprint of messy, cheap, tasty Malaysian classics that have survived decades. Go for the Roti Special and Teh Tarik. Maybe add a Roti Sardin if you’re feeling...
