After my medical treatment, I yearned for a nice bowl of hot beef soup. I went through Jalan TAR & headed to the Soong Kee. As I was there by 11:15am. I parked outside, which was illegal. Just a quick bite and tapau soup & mixed pork porridge.

Ordered a small bowl of minced beef dry tossed noodle and tripe soup. Came in a really small bowl. During the pandemic, I usually tapau, & wouldn't know what they serve it on. The noodles remain consistent, chewy & so is the tangy chillie sauce. However, they tried to skimmed on the choy sum and gave a piece of Romaine lettuce instead! Gobbled the noodles with 4 chopsticks full.

The tripe, beef balls & slices were good. However, the soup was quite weak, no longer beefy & diluted. Disappointed with the taste & I had ordered a large one to be taken away before the food was served. The food order came to RM 34.80 together with the tapau.

An hour after coming home, I drank so much water. I think a lot of MSG was used to enhance the soup instead of using real ingredients. If they can skimmed on the choy sum & replace it with lettuce, why not put less of the beef stock or bones into the making of the soup?

It is a good thing that are more choices now - with the addition of porridge and rice. There is chicken porridge or chicken rice, raw fish or fish porridge, mixed pork porridge, pork balls porridge, roast pork rice, etc.

I had the big packet of Tripe soup which I had tapau, the following day. Totally madness, heavy laden with MSG! Had to discard the soup and ate the tripe, beef balls and beef slices. Another establishment bites the dust ... compromise for profits & not to improve on their...

Followup REVIEW I was back to take away the same beef ball noodles 🍜 for my family again last week ..mid May 2025.

Very well that they hv improved on the meat balls and condiments accompanying their signature dish. I'll say the taste has been bettered.. much to my satisfaction and shall return for more. Perhaps the proprietor should take into account when orders are for takeaway. The noodles .. to be a little more "stiff" .. to be suitable when eating it ¾ of an hour later.

OLD REVIEW IN 2023

I've been a patron of this beef noodles shop since 1968, where my dad brought the whole family there. Then, they were extremely popular, and the serving time was ridiculously long. That spoke of their superior taste and quality. Over the years, they maintained their standards (1980 _ 2000) well.

I've been eating there (and also taking away) ever since.

Today, 09 Dec 2022, I ordered takeaway for my family via phone call.

Have to say the satisfaction index, at least to me has deteriorated terribly. The beef balls now does not taste anything like beef, but had a rather synthetic and gripey taste. The minced beef paste is gooey and soggy, sans the beefy flavour. The (wantan) noodles were made too soft.

I asked for more chili sauce, they gave me 1 extra tiny sealed pack (1 teaspoon volume). That wasn't sufficient and I pleaded for more. They threw in another 2 tiny packs. Why are they so stingy with their chilli? If I were eating in, I could hv piled in as much chilli to my heart's content.

Nope, I no longer enjoy Soong Kee's noodles like I did 10, 20, 30, 40 or...

Horrible Service – A Disgrace to This Restaurant

I have visited this restaurant multiple times, but unfortunately, I’ve had the displeasure of encountering the same young, slightly chubby Chinese male server on two separate occasions. The first time, he took our order without even offering us a menu, and his attitude was appallingly rude. I brushed it off, thinking it might have been a bad day for him.

However, today was the second time I had to deal with his unprofessionalism, and it was far worse. After finishing our meal, as we were exiting through the restaurant’s doorway, he was behind my friend, carrying several hot plates of soup and noodles. Instead of exercising caution, he nearly bumped into my friend, creating a dangerously close call. But what truly shocked me was his reaction—rather than apologizing for almost causing an accident, he had the audacity to scold my friend with incredibly rude words.

This is completely unacceptable. As paying customers, we come for good food, not to be treated with hostility or put at risk of injury. A restaurant should not only serve quality meals but also ensure a safe and respectful dining environment. If the owner fails to address this serious issue, I will have no choice but to warn my friends and family against coming here again.

I sincerely hope the management takes action before more customers are subjected to this kind...

One thing must be said — a long legacy and bad food are not mutually exclusive. Just look at most fast-food empires. But thankfully, Soong Kee is nothing of the sort. Yes, the recipe has likely evolved over its 70 to 80-year run, but the essence — the flavour, the quality, the soul in the bowl — hasn’t just endured; it’s thrived. What started as a humble local haunt has transformed into a pilgrimage site for global foodies hungry for originality and authenticity. And yet, it remains deeply grounded — a truth made visible by the loyal, multi-generational crowd spilling onto the sidewalk this Saturday evening, chopsticks poised, appetites ablaze. The noodles? A masterclass in umami. Every component sang: the beef balls, softly bouncy; the beef slices, impossibly tender; the tendon, rich and gelatinous; and the tripe, perfectly chewy and full of texture — all bathing in a broth that’s equal parts aroma and allure. For a place so bustling and beloved, the service was a revelation — warm, helpful, and genuinely welcoming. We were seated in a flash, our orders taken without fuss and served piping hot before we could even get restless. Even the cashier beamed with the kind of joy that makes you feel like a guest, not just a customer. A wonderful attitude all around, undimmed by what must’ve been a long, demanding day.

I can eat their noodles for three meals everyday for the rest of my life. 5 generations of my family have been visiting Soong Kee faithfully and ordering the same thing over and over again. If I am not wrong, between all of us in the family, more than five million beef balls have been enjoyed since my great-grandfather first step foot into Soong Kee. Their noodles are cooked to perfection, topped with the most flavourful minced meat and their bouncy meatballs complete the dish. Do also order their sliced beef which is super tender and smooth. It would be a sin not to love their chili sauce, which compliments everything that they serve perfectly. For those who are not fans of noodles, theres rice porridge served with a huge variety of accompaniments. Many diners order this as an add-on. Parking is a little difficult and I'd recommend parking at Central Market and taking a short walk over to Soong Kee. Although Soong Kee has other branches in more convenient locations, I still prefer to go back to the original one always. If you have not been to Soong Kee, you have not been to KL.

Many reviewers have mentioned this place to be average but it really depends on which aspect you are evaluating. For lovers of beef noodles who loves tripe, this is the place for you. Exceptionally fresh tripe. Perfectly cooked beef slices (many beef noodle places overcook it) that's super tender and bouncy beef balls. Would recommend the mix meat. I was never a huge fan of tripe but this is among the two places I would eat beef tripe at. The fresh tripe leaves you with a nice bite feel. Combined with tender beef slices and bouncy meat balls, can you imagine the combined experiential outcome? This place has definite remained consistent throughout the years. But one thing I believe it can improve on is definitely the soup. It is a very basic soup base that does not live up to how well its meats are prepared. So if you are a beef noodle soup fan for its soup then this place might not be for you (but you should try it at least once). Its dry mince meat noodles are alright but just a side thing compared to its glorious meats hahahahaha.
