Heard quite some good comments about the lala (clam or paratapes textilis) noodle at Lai Foong coffee shop and finally went there for a takeaway. The stall is facing inside and located behind the chicken rice shop. The description of lala noodle is not appearing on the stall sign facing out to main road; but just inside the stall. unless with prior knowledge, one will not see the sign. The stall sell a variety of noodle cook in different styles and looks like most popular is the lala noodle. The lala is cooked in wok with stock, lala, ginger strip, chinese cooking wine and so on while noodle is dunk in boiling water for short while. The cooked lala and soup and pour into the bowl of noodle, then serve to customer. Each full wok of lala soup can cook for about 10~12 serving; some what mass production. Taste while, nothing fantastic or special. Each bowl is RM11, a bit pricy vs quality. Personally, no worth revisiting. By the way, there are two stall that sell beef brisket noodle. One stall is at the corner shop which serve beef brisket boiled in herbs and soup, and another stall is the wanton noodle stall located in the second shop, serving stew brisket. Both are as good, but different style. While stall at the corner shop is efficient and commercialize, the stew brisket of second shop is by one old couple who has been in the business for many decades. They prepare every serving diligently, could take a bit of time. The waiting time, once you have the noodle in front of you, it is worth...
Read moreBest beef soup noodles in KL, probably in Malaysia. Tasty beef bone broth slowly boiled for a day 7 days a week by passionate 2nd generation Hainanese chef Thomas.. On special days, there are torpedos and granite balls for the connoisseur. Don't be misled by the tourists and Instagrammers eating Lala noodles instead, they are social media sheep with no taste. The shop is fast attracting celebrities, and Sunday crowd can be overwhelming.Tasty bits are a real treat to my close circle of brothers.. Post-pandemic inflation is spreading like wildfire with a disorganised malaise government, prices for basic ingredients for our daily fare have skyrocketed even before the reintroduction of GST 2.0. Case in point, a normal bowl now is priced RM17.00, while RM20.00 surrenders some special bull parts. This is a 70% price hike for a great gastronomy experience, sadly becoming a rare treat in this failed State. Small bowl portion at RM14.00 is still available. Iced barley water is RM2.50 a glass, plus RM0.20 for lime or indulge in a ice kopi at a staggering RM3.00. Special parts are rare and seasonal... The long day starts at 6:30am until soup runs...
Read moreFinally made it here after years of curiosity. Made a beeline first thing in the morning and the place was packed. Since I was travelling alone, was lucky to be a recipient of kindness, and secured a shared table. Otherwise, for the ones coming in a group, be prepared to wait.
I came here for the beef noodle, and went for item No. 1 in the menu (Signature MIX Beef) and it's delightful that they allow different noodle options.
The soup is light yet flavourful, but the star of the bowl is the meat mix itself. It was a good hearty portion, and the beef balls was incredibly good. The tendons were incredibly soft, and all of the cuts were tender. Such a good mouthfeel and for the price it's a steal.
The chili that comes with the bowl can be mixed directly into the soup if you want some kick to your slurps.
As to the kopitiam drink, it was a letdown. Ordered my usual Kopi C Kosong and it's weak. So, tamper your expectations when it comes to the coffee and tea.
I'll be back with my foodie gang...
