It’s Tuesday evening in Kuala Lumpur, and I’m on a mission. A group of friends, all visiting from Europe, were feeling a little out of place. Used to the cozy comforts of bistros, pubs, and diners back home, they hadn’t quite embraced the local flavors of Malaysia yet. The challenge? Finding a place that would make them feel right at home – and that’s when we stumbled upon Dark Horse Sports Bar and Grill.
From the moment we stepped in, the place had an inviting energy. The buzz of conversations, the glow of sports on TV screens, and a cheerful crowd made it feel like the perfect blend of lively and laid-back. We were greeted by Jenny, the ever-smiling, endlessly resourceful server who seemed to have an answer for every question and a solution to every need. One of our friends, who somehow managed to feel cold in the middle of KL’s humidity (go figure), casually mentioned her discomfort. Without missing a beat, Jenny found a fluffy shawl – a shawl in a sports bar! Talk about next-level hospitality. We were all impressed.
When it came to food, Jenny knew the menu inside out and made some stellar recommendations. The Caesar salad arrived in all its glory: fresh, crisp, and so plentiful it could have fed a small army. Even the most salad-skeptical among us couldn’t deny it was delicious.
Then came the beef rib. It was as if it had been slow-cooked in some magical cauldron of tenderness, falling off the bone with the slightest touch. The gravy? Silky, rich, and velvety – the kind you’d happily pour over everything if you could. We all had that moment where you just close your eyes and savor the bite in silence. No words were necessary.
The schnitzel chicken burger was the kind of crispy, juicy perfection that makes you want to order it again before you’ve even finished the first bite. Paired with all the right condiments, it hit that “comfort food” sweet spot we were craving.
As for the roasted chicken, it was a masterpiece of golden-brown perfection. The skin was crispy, the meat tender, and it left us all in awe at how simple ingredients could taste so incredible when done right.
The atmosphere was a win too. For a Tuesday night, Dark Horse was buzzing with energy. There was a friendly pool competition going on, and the constant stream of sports on TV added to the lively vibe. It felt like a place where you could relax and let the evening unfold, whether you were watching a match or just enjoying great food and company.
And then there was Jenny. She wasn’t just our server; she was the heart of the evening. Always attentive, she made sure our drinks were never empty and that we had everything we needed. She checked in on us just enough without hovering, and every suggestion she made felt like it was tailored specifically for us. By the end of the night, it was clear that Jenny and her team were the true stars of the show.
As we wrapped up the evening, my friends were more than satisfied. What started as a quest for something familiar turned into an unforgettable night filled with great food, fantastic service, and a welcoming atmosphere. If you’re ever in KL and in search of a place that feels like home, but with food that’ll blow you away, Dark Horse Sports Bar and Grill is where you want to be. It’s not just a meal – it’s an experience, and Jenny is the secret ingredient that makes it all...
Read moreMixed feelings about this place. We’ve visited four times now to watch the F1 GPs. First three times they didn’t show podiums and after feedback, on the fourth visit they did show podium & post race so I’ll give them some credit for that but on the fourth visit, they messed up our booking by double booking us with someone else. We had reserved the bar seats at least a week beforehand but when we arrived, we were told it was fully booked/reserved even though they confirmed the reservation. They offered us a table but after insisting on the bar seats they told us we could sit at the bar as we arrived first, out of the 2 bar seat reservations. As we sat, the person at the bar (Jimbo or somewhere along those lines; guy with dangling keys hooked to him) very rudely told us to move to the far right and said it was already booked by someone else. Far right seats had barely any view of the screen & was very distracting as it was also the pick up point for drinks so we went back to our table. Quite appalling service from the day time crew as Jimbo, once again was very rude when we raised our hands to order. He saw my friend, ignored here and I raised my hand and he saw me and just walked past me to attend to someone else. 10 mins later, he arrived and his demeanour was disappointing. The night crew of this place is really good, they’ve got good service, especially one waiter which I’ve not gotten the chance to catch his name.
I’ll also give credit where its due, their ambience is really nice to watch the GP, theres games to play whilst you wait for the GP to start. Food is also really good in terms of taste & portion. The owners (I assume) are actually really nice and funny which is why we’re conflicted.
Probably the longest review I’ve ever done but if you can tolerate hot & cold service from the waiters, you should definitely...
