SMOKEYS BBQ — Restaurant in Langkawi Island

Unfortunately, we had an awful experience at this restaurant. I want to say that we gave the manager an opportunity to rectify this and instead he ignored us for days. This restaurant was recommended to us by someone who had visited earlier in the day and we were so excited. My boyfriend was ill and so we fancied a home comfort. I drove over and asked if they could do takeaway, they said yes and I explained that we fancied the sharers option that they offered, and that our friend had recommended the ribs that I think were a special. He had mentioned it was the owners birthday so I said happy birthday when he spoke to me and thanked him for serving me whilst celebrating. They agreed to alter the sharers deal for us, adding extra for the rib as it was a special, whilst taking 2 things off the menu. We agreed. They said it would be 20/30mins and they would message me. After 35 mins we hadn’t heard anything so I nipped over and said no rush, I just wanted to check that we hadn’t missed a message due to the poor service we were having with our sim. The waiter handed me the food and I took it to our hotel. We were really disappointed when the sharers meal only had one small portion of the side dishes, the chicken wings were BLACK, and the brisket was dry, so we messaged them and explained, providing pictures. When we hadn’t heard anything we called and he immediately answered, agreeing with us totally and apologising profusely. He explained they had a new chef, and blamed it on him stating he was going to “rollick him for sending it like that”. He offered us a full refund but we said the rib was fine and we were happy to pay for that. As he was celebrating, and we felt awful interrupting, we agreed to meet up for the refund in the morning as he offered to drop it at our hotel. We were leaving early and explained this. We waited outside at the time we agreed, messaged him, and heard nothing so we left for our ferry. We messaged him to explain how disappointed we were after trusting him and he didn’t respond for 3 days until we contacted him one more time explaining that we were going to write a review if he didn’t respond. He finally responded to us and offered us a very small refund, contrary to what he had initially offered us and we just told him to keep it. He didn’t respond again. We are so disappointed as we were really looking forward to a meal like home, and we’d heard such good things. But to be treated the way we were is out of order. We should have gone to collect the money that night, and not worried about his celebrations. At the end of the day, they still had a duty to their customers. Spotted a car driving around the island with the name of this establishment on the side - intrigued, BBQ is an unusual thing to find here. Checked out the reviews online and all looked good so decided to go for it.

Restaurant is located on the road the leads ultimately to Resorts World, tucked down a small side street - there is a sign though, and if you get a taxi they’ll find it easily.

Vibe was good, with an indoor-outdoor feel - good range of dishes with lots of meat, which is what you want from BBQ. Ordered the brisket, which came served on a rustic board, in a good-sized portion, with chips. There was also corn, which I gave away. Really tasty bit of brisket, well smoked and with tasty sauce - up there with places I’ve been in London.

The beer was Tiger, in a mug - as it was and as it should be. Beer goes well with brisket, as it does with so many things.

Price very reasonable - paid in cash, which I think may have been the only option, but unsure. Didn’t have a dessert, but there were options.

We enjoyed everything we tried, with the beef rib standing out as the star of the meal. It came served on the bone, beautifully smoked with that deep, rich flavour you only get from patient cooking. At 154 MYR, though, it’s not cheap. The meat platter was solid as well, though I’d have preferred the brisket sliced rather than pulled for a more classic presentation.

Service was attentive and friendly throughout, adding to the overall experience. While the food was satisfying, I couldn’t help but wish for a bit more creativity in the menu. Some burnt ends or dishes that extend barbecue techniques beyond just meat would have elevated things further.
