Appreciate that the restaurant provides reservation despite dinner to be served during peak hours. Some pointers to share for the restaurant owner to note, and for the potential diners who wish to patronize them:
Main orders (chicken pot) and few side dishes were missed out even though it was clearly stated in the order slip. For info, the side dishes were charged and more details were shared in pointer 3. Understood that it was peak hours hence, it took awhile for the food to be served. While waiting, observed that other diners who came later had their food served. We checked and reminded the staff a few times for the food/beverages to be served. Side dishes were charged but not served. The cashier did inform us to check the receipt but we did not, trust that the bill is in order. I admit it was our responsibility to check the bill therefore, I suggest everyone who patronizes the restaurant to check the bill receipt before paying. Taste of food wise, not the best and fantastic but still edible. The clam broth turned too savoury after an hour of dining, and it left an uncomfortable thirst. For the environment, suggest the owner to open up the windows if not deciding to upsize the BTU of your aircon as the heat load in the space is too high. Your aircon is not cold enough to cool the environment and it is making it too humid and uncomfortable for diners.
Hope the above suggestions can be heard by the owner and improvement...
Read moreOur first night in Ipoh found us wandering New Town in search of somewhere that was open for dinner. Restoran Wang Seng was not only open, but well reviewed so we grabbed up a table at this traditional Chinese hot pot spot.
This bustling restaurant prepares thick clay pots of red hot charcoal for whatever hot pot you order (and as far as we could tell they only do hot pots, with a few side dishes thrown in for variety). It was very cool watching the charcoal heat, and once we figured out how to order (sort of) we had fun selecting our choice for the meal.
We selected a lamb hot pot (with noodles) and a couple of extra sides: fried bean curd skin; and, fried fish skin in salted egg batter. The hot pot was superb, loaded with lots of lamb (mostly very tender, though some bits were pretty fatty, tbh) with lots of veggies to add to the broth. You’re also provided with a kettle of broth to add to your pot as the heat from the charcoal reduces your hot pot broth. It was a ton of fun adding noodles, veggies and more broth to the hot pot - and the resulting blending of flavours resulted in an ever-changing, delicious meal.
But as good as the hot pot was the highlight for us was the crispy fish skins in salted egg batter. This side plate was off-the-charts delicious; we could have eaten a couple of plates of this side dish and been quite content.
Delicious food and great value for money: RM81 (CDN $23.10).

HANDS DOWN - MY BEST MEAL IN IPOH THIS TRIP. A MUST VISIT.
Hundred-Year restaurant by Lim Weng Sui in ipoh specializing in charcoal hot pot, managed by the current 4th generation. Famed for traditional style charcoal braised lamb belly hotpot 古早味羊腩煲.
Keeping this write up and review very simple here - because a restaurant that sells good food doesn’t need much more convincing.
MUST ORDER:
Braised lamb belly stew 古早味羊腩煲 10/10 XL Prawns in Pumpkin Cheese Sauce 金瓜芝士鲜虾 1000/10 Herbal Chicken Soup Pot (Pre Order) 10/10 Salted Egg Yolk Long Beans 10/10
Probably go as far as to say, the best Tze Char I have eaten in the last few years. Definitely will be my must-visit eatery each time I come back to Ipoh. I actually feel so heartened to see that such traditional flavors still represent so well in this current generation - and I am not even from Ipoh!
Such a thrill seeing all the charcoal works on the sideline, and the breath of the wok from the clay pot just makes the food super amazing. Kudos to all the workers there as well for it’s a really rough job to do and a tough business to run.
For that ultimate complete Ipoh foodie experience, I suggest coming by on the last day because this meal is really hard to beat.
