Went for breakfast around 9.30am on Sunday. Is an old school coffee shop which is noisy and cramped. However it seved delicious fish ball noodles (plain, dried or curry). The chicken curry there is nice too. Other choices include mee jawa, chicken rice, wantan noodles and hong kong chee cheong fun. There is some nice nyonya kuih too.At night there is a push cart selling poh piah. Be prepared for a long wait for some of the food and some stall owners can be quite impatient at times. Service for drinks is fast and efficient. Cleanliness is so so. Prices is reasonable. If you love fish ball and don't mind the environment this is the place to go.

Came here to try the fishball noodles based on some recommendations. Apparently it’s related to the famous Tong Ki restaurant that sells fishball noodles in Old town in the morning. Overall not bad but compared to Tong Ki, it’s not as good. But then again, it’s not crowded and you still get decent fishball noodles at night. P.s. People come to this kopitiam to queue for popiah. They were there before I started eating my noodles and were still there after I’ve finished eating. The queue was long. But in my honest opinion, it was not that great. At least not worth queuing 35-45 for popiah. That’s my cents la

2 stalls with No Signboards : Best freshly made spring rolls, stall located along the walkway, you will see the queues around the stall from afar.... definitely worth the wait! Some will telephone orders in advance. Min 2 pcs and boss will oblige some takeaway turnip gravy for bigger orders. Opens 6.30pm for 2-3 hours. Chicken rice and hor fun stall is very good! Noticed more orders for chicken rice than noodles, soup is authentic and chicken is tender flavorful. Chopped chicken are blanched with hot soup before serving. Long wait during peak hours for Sunday dinner.

I went at 6pm and half of the stalls are closed. So we tried other things. 1 - The so called artisan fish and meat balls were sub par. Fish balls were not chewy, paste textured (too much corn flour or starch powder and not enough fish) and very salty. 2 - The sambal fried morning glory, a very standard Malaysian chinese that no one can stuff up, was inedible. They didn't wash the vegetables during prep so it was full of sand. It was also quite bitter, indicative of residual pesticide. So after 3 small attempts I rinsed my mouth and left the whole plate untouched. Unbelievable. 3 - the so called famous popiah. Waited 20min for an idiot chef to prep a whole batch enough to feed a village before he would decide to start selling so he could create a scene with people just standing around like a swamp of flies waiting for the cow to poo, no queue or ticketing. Absolute madness. Popiah was good, but not excellent to the point of worth waiting next to a sewage pit without law & order and dignity as I have had similar standard ones in penang. Such an arrogant chef won't survive in Penang but somehow find refuge in ipoh. Unbelievable.

I won't go to this place in...

A very typical Malaysian kopi tiam. Depending on the time of day you get there it could be crowded or pretty empty. The popiah here is one of the best in Ipoh.

The Popiah Master creates a moist yet oh so crunchy textured popiah that just makes you salivate in anticipation of the next bite. Some popiahs are dry enough to eat likeba burrito, unsliced. This is not one of them. You don't want to take away this gem.

Get a seat at the kopi tiam, and order a drink as you need one if you ask for chilli in the popiah. A "yingyang" basically "black n white" or what they call a Michael Jackson in slang is a good drink to go with popiah. ( Is basically soy milk with grass jelly drink - think of it as an ancient ancestor of bobo style drinks).

BTW ... popiah goodness only starts at 6pm but be there early as the good stuff is worth...
