Universal Bakehouse is our go-to artisan bakery in the area, specializing in sourdough baked goods. It’s a small shop with a simple yet cozy setup, making it a comfortable spot for a quick bite or a leisurely coffee break.
We love their sourdough’s texture—just the right amount of tanginess with a beautifully crispy crust. Beyond their bread, one of our favorites is their scone—buttery, crispy on the outside, and loose yet slightly moist on the inside, easily one of the best we’ve had.
Seating is non-reservable; you’ll need to order at the counter, and the cashier will assign you a table. During peak hours, getting a seat can be challenging, so expect a wait. Parking is also tricky, with mostly off-street spots that fill up quickly.
The indoor dining area is connected to their central bakery kitchen, so while the fresh baking aroma is inviting at first, it can be overpowering for some, and you might leave smelling a bit greasy. If you prefer an open-air setting, there are a few outdoor seats available.
Pricing is slightly higher compared to other bakeries like Tommy Le Baker, but since this is artisan bread, it’s difficult to make a direct comparison. The craftsmanship and quality of ingredients set it apart, making it a spot for those who truly appreciate well-made sourdough.
For anyone in the area who loves sourdough and handcrafted pastries, this bakery is definitely worth a visit—just come prepared for the crowds, the strong baking aroma, and a bit of a...
Read moreWhen you look at the storefront you might think this is a traditional bakery that sells traditional kopitiam style breads, but you'd be wrong. This is anything but a traditional kopitiam with its range of breads, cakes, and desserts. The sourdough bread is the popular attraction, but it was my least favourite of all the menu items I tried. The bread is actually ok, but it was just very dry and hard which made it hard to eat. Perhaps they toasted it too long before serving me, so if you order your own loaf and eat it at home it might be better. On the other hand, the calamansi lime cake, scones, and doughnuts were amazing. Soft and fluffy, light, delicious. I think their butter is homemade with sea salt which makes it amazing, especially on the scones. There's very little seating so you'll probably be better off ordering the food for takeaway, and many people actually order ahead for pickup. If you want to try the sourdough bread you'll need to come early in the day (or order a loaf in advance) because they run out quite fast. If you come for tea you'll probably only be left with some cakes and desserts. Payment is done with cash or e-wallets only, and street parking can be a...
Read moreOverall I personally opine that the breads, scones and brioche are somewhat overrated.
Ok let’s start reviewing each products:
The crust of Focaccia is too hard compares to the focaccia that I tried in Europe which was light and lofty.
Scones are decent though a bit more biscuity compares to the scones I tried in uk. Universal bakehouse serves their scones with butter and jam. But I believe it would be much better if they can serve with clotted cream.
Brioche seriously needs a lot more improvement.. as I have tried the real brioche from France. When I saw the brioche bread, it was dark brown which is not a normal looks of a brioche. However I decided to try one.
As expected the crust of brioche is over baked. Very lacking on its buttery taste and the bread was rather dry.. Brioche must have substantial buttery taste and it should be super soft and fluffy inside and not dry.
Rather shocking incident is that they charge RM1 to Cut the bread which I have never experienced anywhere. I wonder how it is justifiable.. when their breads prices are already quite high..
One good thing is their friendly...
