Warmth and Authenticity at Chalk in Rabat

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Chalk in Rabat, and I was thoroughly impressed with both the food and the ambiance. This charming small restaurant truly lives up to its name, offering not only warmth in its service but also in the authentic Maltese flavors it presents.

One of the standout dishes for me was the Maltese Ftira. It was a delightfully crispy flatbread topped with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The blend of flavors was a true representation of Malta's rich culinary heritage. The balance between the fresh tomatoes, capers, olives, and herbs, paired with olive oil and a touch of tangy cheese, made each bite a burst of Mediterranean sunshine.

Additionally, the Maltese Platter was an excellent choice for a more comprehensive taste of Maltese cuisine. It featured a well-curated selection of traditional bites—delicious ġbejniet (Maltese cheese), sun-dried tomatoes, bigilla (bean dip), and fresh olives, all served with warm bread. Every element of the platter was perfectly seasoned, giving you a taste of Maltese history and culture in each mouthful.

The atmosphere at Chalk , an old authentic house with 1 meter thick walls, was cozy and welcoming, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a meal with family or friends. The service was attentive, and the staff was knowledgeable about the dishes, eager to share the stories behind each offering.

If you're in Rabat and looking to experience genuine Maltese hospitality and cuisine, I highly recommend visiting Chalk. It’s a culinary experience you won't...

I would love to give a better review, but I cant. Lets make it straight, food was very good (we had Maltese salad and Maltese Ftira), atmosphere as well very nice, but then comes the service.

It took approx 15-20 min that server even comes to our table and ask if we want anything. Once we ordered the food and drinks, we realized that other tables have been waiting for quite some time as well, thats when we started worried a bit. After 45 mins (!) we received drinks and couple minutes later the food. We know sometimes is very busy day but when you have 6 tables inside the bistro, you shall be able to serve them a bit quicker in 2-3 people. And I am not even talking about girls trying to smile or saying something like “it would take some time to have your food” that would definitely make it right in my opinion.

In a nutshell, food is worth waiting a bit longer, but definitely room for an...

I do feel if you walk away from the crowded places in Rabat, you will definitely end up in finding a gem. Yes Chalk is that kind of an eatery. Small, cozy, warm welcome from their only staff yesterday. She was very nice, presentable, politely excusing herself as it was a bit busy. Now let's talk about food: The maltese ftira is wow. Lots of Mediterranean flavours in a simple crunchy bread with a local sausage. Pair it up with local craft beer and you have yourself a wonderful lunch break. The cherry on the cake is their ricotta cannoli. I wish I had enough space for a banana caramel loaf which was tempting me to eat it. I did came back for a fruit smoothie which was a quencher. Again, the experience would not have been great if the lady staff was not excellent. So, kudos to her wonderful customer service.

I forgot to ask but can we sit on the upper level balcony, if I do...

Chalk Cafe Eatery Wine Chalk is a little gem located in Rabat, Malta. Mixed in with the tourist traps, fast-food eateries, and seemingly endless bus tours is this quiet, unassuming café and pastry shop with chocolate and cheese. They have one table downstairs, a couple out front, and room for about twelve upstairs. The menu is simple but delightful: large Maltese Ftira’s, platters, and fabulous salads. This is definitely a budget-friendly establishment. We had the cheese and charcuterie platter on our last visit. Large, generous portions of a variety of Maltese and imported cheeses. The meats were Maltese and Italian sausages, juicy and delicious. Maltese bread, sun-dried tomatoes, Kalamata olives, and fresh cherry tomatoes made the platter perfection. The desserts are heaven. Pair all of these scrumptious items with a glass of Maltese wine, and what more can you ask for?

The food was fine, we had ftiras. They were made from quality ingredients. Only the bread felt like it was bought yesterday. The little balcony is so cute. Made the whole experience way more romantic and cosy. Oh, but the staff... It seemed like both people were hired the day before. The girl told us we'll have to wait around 10 mins, which was fine. Then after 20mins she came back asking what was our order again... We received our food after over 40mins. It took them 40mins to prepare two cold sandwiches!! It took another 10mins to pay as there was no paper in the register and the girl had to search for it in the basement... Lastly, the place is so dirty. Used napkins are laying all over the floor and nobody cares. The bathroom was so filthy, it left us speechless.
