We had a great experience at AKI, and excellent sushi. The menu was very good value despite previous negative Google reviews - the sushi and maki rolls come on a plate of 8 rolls, for €10-15. We also shared the 16-piece maki and Nigiri platter (€25), as well as buttery & salty warm edamame, tossed Asian greens, and pork gyoza. Our bill came to €77 including a bottle of water and a cocktail, and we left stuffed. The restaurant has a very elegant yet chilled vibe, with house music and plenty of air-conditioning. My only disappointment was the nigiri on the platter (salmon and tuna nigiri) which didn’t have much flavour, particularly the tuna nigiri. I think it needed to have been fatty tuna to have got the fresh tuna flavour. However, the flamed salmon sushi dish was exceptional and by far my favourite - and overall it was superb. Looking at the cocktail menu I think they were trying to come up with some really innovative cocktails but these fell short and the Sumotori cocktail with whisky, vermouth and green tea wasn’t anything groundbreaking or different. Staff were attentive and efficient, and it was a delicious meal in a really beautiful restaurant.

Oh boy, I think this was my toughest Michelin star experience (been to 8 previously). Honestly, not even sure how they got a Michelin star in the first place. Entering and getting a table was fine the hostess was friendly and we had our pick of a table. The tables outside are in the alleyway that marks the entrance to the restaurant. Not foreign to Malta but they don’t have the same atmosphere of the restaurant. We sat inside at a two person table that had a wobble strong enough to spill your drink. We ordered a plum wine, which was good but there wasn’t space for the bottle so they placed it a few feet away under the bar in the customer side. It was inconvenient to access for us but they were fairly on top of keeping the glasses full for the most part. Our server was hard to get a hold of when we were ready to order, we were at the table for 15 minutes before we were able to place an order for drinks and then another 15 before food despite being one of seven tables occupied. When we asked about the fish of the day they had to check in with two different servers before asking the kitchen. Then we had to find out they didn’t have lobster available after trying to order it. I’ve had more at tentative staff that were more professional at 3 or 4 star restaurants. For food we started with ordering the shrimp mini tacos, duck spring rolls, and sampler of skewers. Of the three dishes the duck spring rolls were delicious and definitely worthy of the restaurant. Warning: the shrimp mini tacos are ceviche style (which is fine, but not noted on the menu), but the wakame and crispy garlic (noted) were barely there and are majoring overwhelmed by the ceviche flavor if you can see them. It was an unexpected experience based on reading the menu. Second warning for the skewers: the chicken satay has a fish sauce element added to the peanut sauce which is not an experience I’ve had eating at Thai or Japanese restaurants before and it was overpowering where they tasted more like eating a fish then eating chicken. The shrimp skewer was underwhelming and also tasted more like a heavier salty fish flavor, think sea urchin, hen what I’ve come to understand good shrimp taste like. I will say the pork belly skewer was tasty and the sauce on that helped saved the chicken skewer. We had intended to order more dishes but the terrible service and inability to get our servers attention several times deterred from the experience and we decided to leave and go somewhere else to finish out our meal. The general atmosphere was great. Cool bar & neat artwork. We definitely will not return nor would we ever recommend.

So, so disappointed. Based on the other reviews we were thrilled to find such a highly rated sushi/Japanese fusion restaurant in Malta. Unfortunately I would recommend saving your money and going elsewhere after our experience. For the price paid, the service is extremely lacking. We came on a Saturday night and while it was busy our server instantly seemed to forget our section of tables. After 50 minutes our bottle of wine arrived. It should also be mentioned that there are set menus. One in our party is pescatarian (eats fish and veg, not other meat) but there was no suitable option in the set menu and everyone at the table needs to order the set menu for them to serve it. When inquiring about substitutes the server was firm that no alternatives were available and was not willing to ask. We understand sometimes set menus can’t change and ordered other items however once food started arriving we saw problems again. We ordered a few rolls without cucumber. The rolls showed up, not only with cucumber, but the prawn dynamite roll just simply had the batter with no fish (see photo below). At the end of the meal the server must have known that there were issues with the experience and they brought over tacos free of charge. Normally I would never say anything against this, however I do have to in this case. It was a very nice thought but at this point we would have much rather had an apology and discussed a more agreeable solution. Overall, if you’ve made it this far in the review for the money I would not recommend AKI unfortunately.

Yesterday we visited the Amami (Mellhia), a restaurant that was told to be from the same owner as the Aki. Beeing still overwhelmed by the quality and service of the Amami we just decided to check out the Aki today. Unfortunately we were partly disappointed: We told, that we want to have the 10 dishes we ordered dish by dish over the time. The waiter made clear that he understood but then the dishes were presented in 2 courses and that was not what we wanted because you want to concentrate on the one dish after the other. The oysters and the crabs and the scallops were good, but the rest of our order was fair or even unacceptable. The pork gyoza was tasteless, only the sauce did a little job. The grilled octopus was very dry and hard as a stone. But the biggest disappointment was the Wagyu sirloin. We ordered it medium rare and as you can tell from the picture it was over medium. It came cold and on the lousiest plate they found in the kitchen. Besides of the tasteless unemotional way of presenting it. Eating a lot of beef from great quality, we can tell that this was not only poor wagyu beef but also cut wrong. The slice was 1/3rd inch and should be minimum 1 inch thick. Therefor it lost all its tenderness (if there ever was) and was just dry, not soft and disappointing. The cheesecake saved a little the situation so we give the whole three stars but this restaurant is definitely not as high ranking as it shows in google or trip advisor. Our next Asian diner will be in the Amami if we return to Malta….

We are one of the regular customers of this restaurant, which was previously highly praised, but now, due to the greed of the staff, we are forced not to recommend it to anyone! What happened yesterday turned us away from this restaurant forever. We ordered a dish from the menu (photo attached) Sashimi platter 8 pieces. It would seem like a good offer, because... 2 pieces cost more than 6 euros. In the new menu the price was 21 euros, not 19 as in the online menu. But that's not the point. They brought us 2 pieces of tuna, 1 piece of salmon, 1 piece of red snapper and one king prawn and then ATTENTION! The shrimp was cut into 4 pieces. Waiter, when asked, where are the 8 pieces? Where there should have been 2 pieces in total, he showed 4 pieces of cut shrimp, +2 tuna and one each of salmon and red snapper. As a result, for 5 pieces of Sashimi they charged 21 euros. 3 pieces were simply stolen from us! This is a SHAME for a restaurant with a Michelin star which they no longer deserve. And the second point. There are basic restaurant ethics. If 2 people are sitting at the same table and both order a starter, it must be brought at the same time. They brought it to us within 10 minutes of each other. It is clear that no one ate it while waiting for the second one to start eating at the same time. It’s a shame when Malta, with good service, is turned into India, where you are not respected.

Disappointing Service for a Fine Dining Experience The food was quite good and authentic, the service was far from satisfactory. For a fine dining establishment, the service felt indifferent and impersonal—much colder than what you’d expect even from smaller restaurants. The staff seemed to rush through every interaction as if fulfilling a routine rather than offering genuine hospitality. To our surprise, there was no “thank you” after we paid, nor did anyone acknowledge us when we left the restaurant. Moreover, the design of the set menu was poorly thought out. We ordered the set menu for each of us, but it wasn’t made clear that the dishes would be shared. Instead of each person receiving individual portions, all items were served on shared plates. While this was manageable for some dishes, it became problematic later in the meal. For example, there was only one bowl of rice to accompany the steak, and the dessert consisted of just one single scoop of ice cream to be shared between two people. This left us feeling dissatisfied and disappointed. Overall, while the food met expectations, the service and menu design fell short of what one would expect from a restaurant at this price point.
