Review of Chinese Garden Restaurant,  Grand Baie

Fabulous unique experience, extremely customer friendly, fantastic vegan options :-)

Sent messages via FB and they got back to me super fast. I'm vegan, had a birthday party of 5 people on a Friday night, and within a few messages they had given me all their vegan options for the whole party, both on and off menu, and booked us a table for later that evening.

They did special variations for us so we had a variety of vegan food to share around the table. They knew exactly what vegan was and went to every effort to give us choice and variety, tailor to our desires, and ensure we were happy throughout our entire meal. They even put my birthday cake in their fridge and lit the candles for us when we were ready! We were actually the last ones to leave but they didn't rush us at all.

It's on the main road opposite the sea so there were a few cars going by, but not too many, and even at night the view is lovely. The decor is very homely but they are very well-equipped, and this just adds to the warm comfortable atmosphere of the place. You forget who is around you here, they make you feel very special. A little word of warning to vegetarians and vegans, this restaurant specialises in fresh food and they have seafood, so there are live crabs kept (subtly) in the main restaurant area.

I am shocked to find a place like this in Mauritius as customer service in Mauritius is generally very limited, and when you say you're vegan people just want to give you pasta with salad or just tell you they don't do vegan food (even though they could help you  if they wanted to). But not here! They actually have great options with proper vegan food, and know exactly what vegan requirements are. Also they have a really decent wine selection, their food is super tasty, and their food prices are very reasonable. Everything is freshly made and tastes delicious!

100% fantastic customer service, probably the best I have experienced in Mauritius.

I'm so happy I found this place. I would go again and again. Try them out, a really fantastic cosy place to go with friends.

Thank you for a wonderful evening Chinese Garden Restaurant!!!

Wish I read the reviews before ordering from Chinese Garden via Delivery Dodo. I ordered a chicken and egg cantonese fried rice and a portion of crispy squid. The portions for both were ridiculously small. Both were unseasoned, no salt/fish sauce in both, the chicken in the rice was super bland. Overall the food was bland. I had to season the food before eating. The chicken in the fried rice was microscopic. The squid was very oily and fishy. While having the fried rice, I straight away could tell that the food was not prepared fresh, it was a heated meal in a microwave. Part of the food was warm, part was cold, cold as in fridge cold. I had another 2 bites and threw away the rice. I had a stale pea. It wouldn't surprise me if this was leftovers from other customers at the restaurant which have been kept and then heated to sell to other customers. Be very careful, avoid this place at all cost. For the price, it's not worth it, I will never eat there again. What a scam!

I also reviewed the food on delivery dodo but didn't put a full review as above as I already posted the review...

Whilst the food was ok, nothing special, the prawns were fresh enough, the service and the ambience were appalling. We visited on Saturday night for my mother’s birthday. The starters took almost an hour to arrive and the mains took almost as much to arrive also. I repeatedly asked for an alcoholic mojito but was given a non-alcoholic one. We were seated next to a large family, who couldn’t be bothered to control their children, whilst they ran around our table and into the chef’s kitchen! The family just kept eating and the staff did nothing to ask them to not disturb the other guests in the restaurant. My father’s mains arrived and the fries were cold. They ended up just reheating it again. First and last time we will eat at this restaurant. Not recommended! Try La Rougaille...

Unfortunately this visit was disappointing. The service was very bad, but in their defense, the food is still tasty. The music this time was too much... just old and too loud. It blares from a soundbar so much you cannot have a conversation at the table. The fumes and traffic noise is part of the balcony view and experience. You either like it or not... I would like a more attentative service, listening and helping foreigners, instead of barging around looking overwhelmed. The food wasn't brought out timeously ito starters and mains. The food was ok, just alot of rice and noodles... The crab was apparently ok, no pinchers (so patron got cut on their hands) and no bib or water/wetwipes for cleaning hands between eating ... it would be nice if this was a better experience

It was a big surprise! We spontaneously decided to dine at the Chinese Garden, it looked like a standard Asian restaurant, so we weren't expecting anything special - but when the food was served, we had to change our minds a lot. The Peking red snapper was delicious! The crispy crust, juicy fish flesh, spices that complement and do no overpower the flavor of the fish - simply top class, and the owner of the restaurant personally cut the fish for us :-). We enjoyed the Peking duck as well - the meat was very tender and tasty - very delicious. Thanks a lot!
