A really distasteful practice of adding "propina" as a line item in your bill.
Sure you can make them take it off... But in all honesty I originally put a 20% gratuity on top of the total of the bill. My American friend visiting also left a very large tip on the table. This practice was going to amount to the waitstaff a 60%+ gratuity without anyone noticing except the grifter$. This is a horrible tactic to take advantage of the tourists.
Not to mention for the price we paid for 6 tacos and 4 Cokes I could buy 100 tacos of the same quality on my corner in Progreso.
I would avoid this location and enjoy one of the dozens of other upstanding restaurants waiting to trust in your satisfaction and not charge you for service they are charging you for already.
I would have given 4star and raved forgiving the price in exchange for location... I get that side of the game... But that charge on my bill is not something I agreed to.
I've reviewed many places here and have heard of this practice being common... It's my first time seeing it in play and the last time I visit The Grill.
Great Building...Pristine Location... Highly trained waitstaff with great observation skills and attention to detail. Beautiful Hostess and a huge selection of great looking entrees in the menu. Bathrooms were clean and the ambiance in the back appeared to be stellar in the tropical night air. No coffee ready? Small warm Coke in plastic bottles?
Using the star system will not correctly explain the details. It's worthy of 4stars if the secret "tax" was eliminated
The waiters would behave differently as well. They are good at what they do ...but wise to game...
Read moreService was fine, food was overpriced, but that's to be expected at a restaurant at such a prime location. My mistake may have been to order a burger at a Mexican grill House, but it was the only decently priced meal offered. I was even asked how I would like my burger (I asked for medium well). The burger was barely edible due to the incredibly low grade quality of the meat. The bun and fries were acceptable, but it's what's inside that counts, right? I can't express strongly enough at how disappointed and appalled I was at the quality of the beef patty in the burger. It was mushy, salty, soaked in grease, and overall didn't taste like real beef, let alone 120pesos worth of a meal. I highly preferred the nearby burger king by far. To make matters worse, they added on an involuntary 20% tip to the bill, as if they know they have done you wrong and are too ashamed to face the consequences of a fair tip. As I said earlier, their service was fine, attentive and polite, so I would've tipped anyway. Perhaps their other dishes are much better and worth the hefty price, but I walked out of there chagrined at my burger purchase. I noticed only tourists ate there, and my heart goes out to all those poor souls who ordered and will order the burger at this establishment expecting a meal at least on par with burger king. To anybody considering eating here, approach with extreme caution. To the owners, please order better burger patties, ones that are fit for human...
