LOVE this place - the music, the food, the lighting, the service is impeccable and clearly well thought out! It’s old school nostalgic Chinese food with a Mexican (lime) twist! And not greasy! Roberto our server was incredibly attentive and kind! They have a light over each table which gives it this close/private/cozy feeling - so well designed.
First off, we are vegetarian/vegan and we had no issues! Highly recco for vegetarians or vegans. Here’s what we ordered:
Cucumber Salad (Enselada de Pepinos): Refreshing, a perfect spice kick, sesame oil, crunchy
Charred Avocado (Aguacate Tatemado): On the sides portion of the menu, do not sleep on this! Smoky meets chili crisp meets creamy omg what a bite.
Veg Chun Cun: Flavor in this was WHOA. Crispy, deep, delicious.
Chiles y Cebollas Asadas: This was also on the sides menu but I’d consider it the condiment you didn’t know you need! We put this on everything. The whole thing has this amazing depth of flavor from the roasted green onions.
Chow Fun Hongos: A really tasty noodle dish! This was the only dish we have feedback on - a tad too acidic and salty with a bit too much sauce. But all things said, still good especially with some fresh lime on top. If I were them I’d add cilantro to cut the richness a bit.
Carne Mexicali Sin Carne (without meat): This dish is typically made with beef but they made it vegetarian for us - so it was just broccoli and asparagus but boy did it SLAP! This was easily our favorite dish! I wish they’d just put this on the menu as a veg option and do it with tofu instead. The fermented bean sauce was delicious especially with some fresh lime squeezed on top. What would really make this dish pop would be some fried onions or fried...
Read moreWent here with a couple friends yesterday evening! We were sat promptly and greeted by a friendly server. Unfortunately, we didn’t see her again for another hour 😂😭🙏🏼 helped by another server eventually (by request, after 20 minutes of waiting, no water or anything…) who did take our order. (Side note: one of my friends has a severe nut allergy! He communicated this in polite Spanish to both servers and they took it seriously in their response. End side note.) Food comes out … We inexplicably receive an unfamiliar beef and broccoli dish instead of the Mexicali chow mein, which we ordered. Our second server now informs us (upon request) that they didn’t have the chow mein? Friend confirms that this beef dish does not contain nuts, server assures us it doesn’t. And then … ya ~ we literally found a half of a peanut at the bottom of the beef dish, after we’d all eaten copiously from it !!!!! ☠️☠️☠️
Sooo … My friend runs off to the hotel to get his medicine, throat swelling. The server assures us he wrote no nuts on the order to the kitchen… I just try and explain that we’re super sad because the whole experience has been so weird and awkward and medically dangerous lol 😭
But they agreed to comp us for the whole meal 🙏🏼🥘! Altho they did started clearing our table right away, ushering us out 😂
Besides the really, really bad operational service and the allergy incident with my friend: the food was fire 🔥 and the drinks were good. The staff were kind, even if the experience was really not good lol 😹
This was my first time … I would go back. But if I went back and a similar thing happened, then I’d probably come back here and change...
Read moreWe stumbled upon this restaurant as tourists and could tell it was going to be great. It's a fresh take on fairly straightforward chinese food with a mexi/mexicali twist. Limes everywhere and I'm here for it. As I am from SF and LA, I see alot of Mission Chinese Food and other kind of young hip chinese places as comparisons. The food was excellent. The vibe is young and cool, the playlist was 60s garage and surf rock and not too too loud, great service.
Mexicali beef- must order. I've never had beef quite like this and it was delicious, very crispy but not greasy, they claim stir fried but I've never seen something this texture come out of a wok, mysterious and delicious. Loaded with wok blackened veggies as well which were almost better than the meat. Dan Dan Noodles- excellent, not too spicy in my opinion if you're used to spicy chinese noodles. General Tso's Chicken- a good rendition, not that unique but very well done. Cucumber salad- We order this whenever we see it, a very good version with a sesame/peanut base sauce. Pork wonton- For me just ok but my husband thought they were excellent. Good use of black vinegar. Carnitas colorados- basically classic roast pork chashu, very tasty Green Fried Rice- very good, eclectic with many different veggies than are normally found in fried rice.
We ordered all this for two people because we only eat two meals a day. For normal appetites this would probably be 1-2 too many dishes for 2 people, but in general the starter portions are...
