I’m from Houston, Texas…where we have amazing authentic cuisines from around the world. This is THE BEST Italian restaurant I’ve ever been to. The prices are great for the quality of the food. Quality ingredients cost more. If you want a massive bowl of mediocre pasta, you can find Olive Gardens throughout the city. Portion sizes are appropriate to the cost and style of restaurant.
My Airbnb happens to be around the corner, so I’ve had dinner here 2 nights in a row (headed there again tonight).
The vibe is smooth and warm, and you can tell the staff are like family.
So far I’ve had a couple of the pizzas as take-out to share with friends (Sicilian was absolute perfection). Dining in, I’ve had the fettuccini with shrimp and gnocchi with Parmesan and truffle. I don’t order gnocchi often because it’s rare to find a good one. This is a GOOD one - maybe the best I’ve ever had. Most orders come with a slice of this beautifully dense and flavorful homemade bread that’s chefs kiss for sopping up every last drop of sauce.
I’m not a big drinker, but I tried the Apperol sprits and Limoncello spritz - both delicious and generously sized.
I’ve visited CDMX 30+ times over the last decade, and I’ve had some amazing food here (including top tier Mexican cuisine). I think this is the first time I’ve written a review for a restaurant - this place is special (and I selfishly want it to be successful so I can continue coming every time I...
Read moreI would have loved to write a good review of this place. It is a tiny restaurant and must not be well known. The food was just inconsistent.
There are probably 6 tables so it is intimate. The servers were efficient and there was an english language menu.
Here is what the four of us ordered...
Burrata - this appetizer was really great. The cheese was soft, the bread that came with it was herbaceous and the dressing was delicious. It got our hopes up for our main course.
Meat Lasagna was mainly ground meat with a tiny amount of shaved cheese on top and not soft cheese like ricotta or mozzarella. It lacked, sauce and significant noodles. IT just wasn't lasagne.
Of the three Pizzas - the best was the bacon/onion pizza. I think they called it "Torino"
The garlic pizza was terrible. It contained a bunch of barely roasted crushed garlic from a jar on top. Inedible.
The meat lovers pizza was just a greasy meat pizza. Nothing was outstanding about it.
Further, all pizzas had undercooked crust with no char and as a final complaint, the menu called their style of pizza "Sicilian". This is not Sicillian pizza - it is thin...
Read moreWe so enjoyed our meal at Il Tomato. We came in shortly before the kitchen was closing and the owners Luis and Amaya were so accommodating and friendly. The atmosphere inside is very cozy and inviting. We ordered two salads, two pizzas and a bottle of Chardonnay. Everything was delicious, the ingredients were so fresh and the pizza was just what we were after. The dough was light and not greasy. My wife really loved the roast pineapples on her Hawaiian pizza, and I ordered the Sicilia which had yummy artichokes, sundried tomatoes and black olives. Our only regret is we don't have time in our trip to go back. They also recommended other great places to eat in CDMX and recommended local beers. On top of all that, they have an adorable dog who was also very sweet and friendly....
