Brasserie Hoekenrode — Restaurant in Amsterdam

Vegans stay away. It's 2023 and this place is unable to accommodate a vegan with one week notice in Amsterdam. I doubt they have a real chef in the kitchen. We are definitely not welcome. I went there on a work event. The vegan option was chosen for me and that was stated in arrival, even though I emailed them days prior to inquire about the options, I think this hasn't happen to me for 4 years. The menu has veggie options clearly written but don't be fooled, it is not that they are accepting, it's just the menu they always had and find ways to label it veggie. Anyway first waiter total useless, my friend got a raw streak and was not asked how he wanted it, I had to hunt him down to even give us a menu, drinks and order the food. The place was packed, far too busy for the amount of staff they had. I got the chosen food, fritata, was so spicy I was unable to eat it, also it was just the normal meal without the cheese, so you pay the same price for less ingredients ( so many vegan cheese out there, this is just unacceptable, they have an Albert Hein across the road). The side salad had no dressing on it. Just raw vegetables. The next waitress was very accommodating and replace my meal with a pasta dish that was OK. I would have wanted the falafel burger, FALAFEL, the go to staple when there is no vegan options, they put cheese and mayo in it so I could not have it. All in all, this place doesn't care about sustainability. I would avoid at all cost, so many better options...

My wife ordered Risotto and Frittata arrived. My meal was as ordered except for incorrect sauce which was quickly corrected. Wife's meal took 10 minutes to correct. When bill was provided it was the most expensive we'd had for dinner in 2 weeks in the Netherlands - in this case it transpired because glasses of wine were 11 Euros each. All through the meal we were plagued by fruit flies. When waiter asked if our meal had been good we asked him why there were so many flies, including those which had landed in our drinks. He replied his home has a lot of flies too. He then told us we were mistaken and my wife had ordered Frittata and not Risotto. As he wasn't the waiter who'd taken the order while I'd been present I'm happy to challenge him. Overall I'd say if you're happy to eat something you didn't order while fending off a cloud of flies and pay a premium for the privilege and having to deal with lying, surly waiters, by all means eat here. I recently had the pleasure of visiting Brasserie Hokenrode. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was warm and inviting.

The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, making us feel welcome right away. The service was smooth, and everything arrived promptly and with a smile.
