We recently visited Cafe de Oude Wester for a taste of a traditional English breakfast. While the idea was delightful, the execution left us wanting.
Firstly, the portion size was underwhelming. The set menu offered a limited selection of drinks – coffee, tea, or beer. We opted for coffee with milk, but were informed that only black coffee was included. With this unexpected restriction, one of us opted for water instead. Disappointingly, we were not informed that water would be a separate charge, nor that the price of the breakfast wouldn't be adjusted to reflect the lack of a beverage.
This experience highlighted a concerning lack of flexibility and communication from the staff. We felt a little nickel-and-dimed with the surprise water charge and missed the opportunity to enjoy our coffee as preferred.
Finally, the quality of the food itself wasn't impressive, especially considering the rather high price point. Overall, this disappointing experience means we'll likely avoid this place...
Read moreTerrible food and bad customer service. Avoid at all cost. Food was extremely salty which was not edible for me. I barely touched my hutspot (traditional beef meatballs) at 17 euro a dish and it made me so thirsty, I asked the waitress for another cup of tap water and she refused to give me. She then said it loudly at the restaurant that we dont usually give more than 1 cup of water. Seriously?? So rude!! She clearly doesn't want any tips and needs serious training session from the boss. If it wasn't because their food was overly salty, I wouldn't have asked for water to save me. My friend ordered a vegetarian dish and there was ham on the plate even though she asked the waitress clearly when ordering. We so wanted to try traditional Dutch food at a local restaurant and the experience was horrendous. We left hungry after wasting 30 euros. Never coming back here again if I ever decide to visit Amsterdam...
Read moreWe'd got off the tram a few blocks away heading for a restaurant we thought we'd try out, but in the end it wasn't for us, so we walked until we stopped this little place. It wasn't too busy, with more people sitting outside so we had a choice of seats inside. The waitress came over quickly - we were too hungry so choose a couple of smaller items, soup and toastie/panini. Both were just what we needed and it came out quickly and super hot and was very tasty. We had icecream also which was huge! Decor was lovely, it looks a really nice place to just sit and chill for a while, I wish we had time to return. Place was clean too and only took cash on this visit (there is an ATM just a few meters away on the same side of the street however).
Close to Ann Franks House plus other lesser known points...
