Situated on the corner of Prinsengracht and Westermarkt, Cafe Kalkhoven has a wonderful view of Westertoren, Amsterdam's most iconic landmark. Dating back to 1670, it is one of the city's oldest brown cafes. The outside terrace is open throughout the year and stretches around the cafe's two corners. Situated between two zebra crossings with a constant flow of pedestrians, it can sometimes be a battle getting into one of Kalkhoven's two entrances.
The interior is reasonably spacious however the lighting is very dim and not to everyone's liking. Old paintings are featured on the walls and many of the property's original features have been retained, including the authentic barrels behind the bar. Immaculately attired bar staff ensure a usually prompt service where locals take preference over tourists.
Breakfast and lunch is served daily between 11AM and 4PM. It's mostly standard pub grub, however the homemade meatballs and erwtensoep, a thick Dutch pea soup served with smoked sausage, are noteworthy. There's a good choice of draught beers including Heinken, De Koninck, Affligem Blond, Affligem Dubbel and Brand Weizen, as well as a variety of bottled beers, the majority of which are Belgian. The selection of jenever (Dutch gin) is equally impressive.
From Sundays through Thursdays, the cafe closes at the relatively early hour of midnight. It stays open later on Fridays and Saturdays, depending on how many customers are...
Read moreI believe we got a racist experience in this place. My parents and me wanted to have some coffee here in the terrace.
While we were sitting a senior woman working in the place was attending two young local ladies in the table beside ours. She was being smiley and friendly to them. Suddenly, when she turn to us with a total different face expression with no smile at all to clean the table she said "Only drinks". After that I said we would like to drink some coffee, however she said we can only have it inside (even though everyone was drinking outside), I ask her if she could repeat again because I didn't understand properly and she left.
Then, she came again to give the drinks to the table beside ours, and even though we were looking at her and she was seeing us she didn't attend us.
After 7 minutes, we decided to leave to keep enjoying Amsterdam.
Definitely, the treat was horrible. The tone the girl was using with us was not the best and even though I asked for help I didn't get any reply...
Read moreI’ll start by saying Amsterdam, hardest place to find a toilet. but on our travels we discovered this little cafe bar and thank god we did put an order in and they served us the tastiest baileys coffee that we went back the next day for a 2nd one and there apple pies are delicious also. I found a little sign inside that prohibits the use of phones on speaker and playing loud videos in today generation that can be appreciated especially from a self aware phone addict it was nice to stop mindlessly scrolling and just stop and enjoy what was set in front of me for a change so if your in Amsterdam give this cafe a we stop by and 100% try one of those coffees and a slice...
