My recent visit to De Ysbreeker left a lot to be desired, and I feel compelled to share my experience. Unfortunately, I must say that it was far from pleasant and did not live up to the expectations I had for this establishment.

First and foremost, the ambiance was completely ruined by the presence of rowdy, drunk children seated right next to us. It was both frustrating and uncomfortable to endure their disruptive behavior throughout our meal. I expected a more civilized environment, especially considering the reputation of De Ysbreeker.

Furthermore, the service we received was nothing short of annoying. The staff seemed disinterested and inattentive to our needs. It took an eternity to get their attention, and even then, their responses were curt and unhelpful. I had hoped for a more attentive and accommodating service that would contribute positively to our dining experience.

To make matters worse, we encountered an issue when trying to pay separately for our meals. Despite our request, we were informed that it was not possible. This lack of flexibility left us feeling frustrated and inconvenienced. It is disheartening to see such an establishment fail to accommodate basic customer preferences, especially when it comes to something as simple as splitting the bill.

Additionally, we were disappointed to find out that we weren't able to order cocktails. It is perplexing that a restaurant would not have this option available, considering the wide variety of beverages usually offered in similar establishments. This limitation further added to our disappointment and made us question the overall quality of De Ysbreeker's menu.

All in all, my experience at De Ysbreeker was far from satisfactory. The presence of intoxicated children, the annoying service, the inability to pay separately, the lack of cocktail options, and the excessive waiting time for a table all contributed to a disappointing dining experience. I expected much more from a restaurant of this caliber. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend De Ysbreeker based on my visit, and I hope the management takes these concerns into consideration for future...

March 2023: I've been to De Ysbreeker a few times in the last year's window, so this is what I can tell.

The place is a bit pricey, but some items are very well worth it imo.

Let's start with latte macchiato. It is served with a bag of sugar and a cookie (check the photo). It is currently among the best lattes I can get in Amsterdam. The way they prepare it, the temperatures, the foam, the beans, the grind size used, the amounts, whatever they are doing, I love this latte. That is a 5+/5.

In September 2022, I had their sandwich with ham and cheese. That was lovely and a heavy sandwich, which I find justifies its price. 5/5

In February 2023, I had a croissant with cheese that was a bit of a downer, though. It lacked taste, and it was a bit difficult to cut without all stuff flaking all around. Maybe that was a one-off, but factored in with the price, that was about a 2/5.

The staff is very good at dealing with customers, and professionally friendly 5/5. The ambient (indoors) offers a variety of tables. There is one, long, a bit of a social sit-next-to-some-strangers table, also with apparent charging spots. There are standard tables for groups who want to sit together. Fine by me, 5/5. This is a place I would pick if I want to have a good conversation with someone. And, for full disclosure, the times of my visits were mornings.

Altogether, it is hard not to give this place a 5, but be mindful that ymmv. My judgment is given based on morning visits, and mostly having a latte and...

Café-Restaurant De Ysbreeker – Timeless Elegance by the Amstel

Located on the eastern banks of the Amstel River, Café-Restaurant De Ysbreeker is one of Amsterdam’s most beloved spots — a perfect blend of history, charm, and modern comfort. With its grand 18th-century facade, high ceilings, and classic wooden interiors, De Ysbreeker offers an atmosphere that’s both elegant and welcoming.

Whether you’re stopping by for a morning coffee, a long lunch, or a leisurely dinner, this café-restaurant delivers. The menu features a mix of French and Dutch influences, with seasonal dishes, quality wines, and expertly brewed coffee. Their terrace is a true highlight — spacious and sun-drenched in summer, offering stunning views of the Amstel and passing boats.

Inside, you’ll find a mix of students, professionals, artists, and locals — all drawn by the relaxed vibe and the sense of timelessness that De Ysbreeker exudes. It’s a place where you can read the newspaper over an espresso, meet friends for drinks, or enjoy a romantic evening meal.

Steeped in cultural history, De Ysbreeker has long been a meeting place for writers, thinkers, and creatives — and that spirit still lingers in the air. It’s not just a café or a restaurant — it’s an institution.

If you’re visiting Amsterdam and want to experience a local favorite with soul, character, and a riverside view, De Ysbreeker is the place to go. Comfortable, classic, and quietly...

A great spot in Amsterdam to have some breakfast, lunch or dinner. We made a reservation for 3 people on a Sunday evening at 8pm. As expected, it was not busy at all. There were plenty of tables and chairs available. I like the overall vibe of the place. It’s very spacious with the high ceilings and it is very cozy. For dinner I had the “SOFT SHELL CRAB: in tempura with lime mayonnaise and an Asian salad”-starter. It was really good! The crab was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The salad provided some freshness to the dish. For mains both of my friends had the “RISOTTO: white wine risotto with mushrooms, parmesan and truffle sauce”. Both dishes were really delicious, everything tasted good and freshly made (although the plates were not completely clean, so we wiped them clean with our napkins). For dessert I had the “Sticky Toffee Ginger Cake with vanilla ice cream”. It was a large dessert for me, the cake was bigger than expected and together with the caramel/toffee sauce, cookie, and vanilla ice cream it’s a lot. It was delicious though! The ginger was definitely present. I will definitely return to this place in the near future! Highly recommended to spend your quality time here.
