Cafe de Ebeling — Restaurant in Amsterdam

This evening we had a very disappointing experience at this restaurant and cannot recommend it. We chose this restaurant based on the reasonably priced and varied menu published on their website and displayed by the front door. However, once seated, we were given a different menu with higher prices and fewer options.

We assumed this was the evening menu and ordered from it, only to later see other diners (who were locals) being served dishes from the advertised menu. When I approached the manager, I was told that there was a special menu for online bookings and that staff shortages forced them to offer the alternative menu. This explanation did not make sense, as staffing levels shouldn't affect which menu is offered.

To add to our frustration, my chicken satay was inedible—priced at €22, it appeared to have been cooked from frozen and served with a sauce from a jar. My daughter’s burger came with some cheese (which appeared to have been scraped off) even though we had asked to hold the cheese.

The photos attached to this review include a picture of the advertised menu and the menu we were given. I explained to the adjacent table, who were also tourists, the reason for taking the picture as they asked about it. Instead of offering a solution, the manager promptly came to our table and reprimanded me.

I paid the bill in full even though I didn’t eat my food.

Went here for drinks with friends. Was a very dissatisfied and disappointing experience .Firstly, they wont serve cocktails after 10pm, but they can do different types of G&T. Secondly, ordered my cucumber G&T, and they got it the wrong. Thirdly, the waiter comes back and says they’re suddenly out of cucumbers! At this point I am just parched and tired, and asked to make it a normal non alcoholic tonic with ice. Fourth, the bill comes quickly cause they had to close the till and they charged me the same amount as an alcoholic beverage! When I confirmed the price with the waitress that was taking the bill, I was told its the same as I initially ordered the G&T with alchohol in the first place. Appalled, baffled but was too fed up with all the bad service, and excuses, I just paid. I had 5days in Amsterdam in September , as fate would have it .I had to eat almost every meal here. I was really lucky , de Ebeling is just wonderful . A large amount of patrons were locals , a good selling point . All the staff spoke some English , and very nice to deal with . Right down to helping explain the menu for me . Try the Amsterdam Hotdog , never had I enjoyed a hotdog so much . Tried different meal each visit , never a complaint all tasty . Try the pizza it's Dutch style , so different so nice .
