The food: Absolutely exquisite! We ordered their soup of the day as a starter to share; it was a clear mushroom broth that was literally sent from the gods - it was that good! We followed this with their beef stew, it's their speciality and it didn't disappoint! I'm so glad I had this dish entirely to myself! It came with a decent helping of boiled potatoes and veg. It was a lot of food. The service: The older woman serving us was not very pleasant. When we placed our order (food and two beers) I asked for a glass of tap water. She said they don't serve tap water, instead I could have still or sparkling. Being the person I am, I'd rather go thirsty than be forced to order bottled water in a city with brilliant tap water. Anyway, she brought me a glass of tap water in the end - which I think was impotant otherwise I may have written a stinking review. There was another waitress that made up for the others poor behaviour; she was attentive and even engaged in some like questions and answers. The ambience and other things: It's a small, family run restaurant. It's got that very old, granny style to it which is so fitting for the food being served. It smells great inside and the tables are close together so it feels warm and lively. As far as I understand there's two rules; you have to order food (you can't just drink) and if you want some tap water you better order another beverage. Also, they aren't open on a Sat and Sun. In sum, I will definitely be back when next in Amsterdam... Oh and did I mention: two beers, one starter soup and two mains of beef stew came to £45 ~ other...
Read moreThis is an extraordinary, delightful jewel of a restaurant. Somewhat out of the way, definitely out of the mainstream, completely unassuming and un-self conscious, and oh so good! It's a rarity in Amsterdam, because it features authentic Dutch cuisine, done really well, without any of the touristy trappings of so-called Dutch restaurants in the more commercial sections of town.
I discovered the restaurant quite by chance, while walking around the neighborhood, as it’s rather low-key, but its warm and inviting presence piqued my curiosity, as well as it’s menu, which is purely Dutch.
We had a delicious mushroom cream soup, a schnitzel, and a chicken stewed in beer, and it was all perfect. As side dishes we had some creamed leeks and Brussel sprouts with faba beans, beautifully seasoned ( I’m not usually a fan of any of these vegetables, bit these were yummy!!), a portion of boiled potatoes, and a portion of fried potatoes. The thing is, neither the boiled nor the fried potatoes conform to the mental image that I carry for either dish: all I can say is that both were delicious!
I closed with a bowl of berries in a sort of home-made yogurt that again, defies description. Far better and tastier than it sounds.
The most remarkable thing? This restaurant is not expensive. It’s not “moderately priced”. In fact, it’s downright inexpensive! Surprisingly so! In other words, don’t miss it. You’ll be glad you went.
And if you’re visiting Amsterdam, and looking to experience truly authentic Dutch food that’s not made for tourists, and not overpriced, then this is the...
Read moreWe had booked a table for three people. I was there ten minutes earlier and of course patiently waiting outside until the table was ready. The other two people lost the tram so they came 15 minutes later, but I was already seated and having a beer while looking at the menu. While I was ready to order for all of us (as the other two told me what to order by looking at the online menu), the lady that takes the food orders came and ask me in a weird tone if the others are coming. I politely responded that they are gonna be there in 4 minutes but before saying that I am ready to order she told me that she loses money with the people waiting outside and walk away(!) As I said, I already ordered a beer and I was ready to order for everyone. I found that super rude and it destroy my mood but I didn’t leave as indeed my friends arrived. We had to ask three times for her to come and take our order. We ordered a soup of the day, carpaccio and a salad, beef stew, chicken in beer sauce and grandmother’s meatball. The last one was too salty the rest were very nice. We also got two desserts, the pudding and the chocolate cake, 5 beers and a bottle of water. I think 100€ bill in this restaurant for three people compensates the 15 minutes of the delay of part of the company, but the rude behavior that ruins your customer’s mood doesn’t get fixed and we will not come back. The other waitress though was very...
