I was so pleasantly surprised when I came to this restaurant. Nothing pretentious, nothing fancy or over the top, just a simple small place where people come for a home cooked meal with simple yet high quality ingredients ( and with a helping of love for the craft of cooking). If you get hot easily, do not come here because the restaurant does not have air conditioner and it gets stuffy. It absolutely gave me the endearing impression of a meal at home. Creamy mushroom soup elicited nostalgic emotions. The delicious and cooked to perfection schnitzel with a balck pepper sauce was a celebration of quality meat. The simple sides of cooked leeks and fried ( real, not French fries) potatoes made it so much homier. For dessert , we went for the pudding of the day, which was a tapioca pudding ( not the nursing home kind, but the delicious and thick kind) with whipped cream and a liqueur-used thinl layer of sauce with have a gourmand bitterness, toning down the sweetness. My sister had an airy chocolate souffle ( which is exceptionally hard to make, despite the seemingly easy recipe) with a cherry preserve, sweet, yet tart. Two things to note, you absolutely need a reservation here!!! To the owners, please change "whippet" cream to "whipped", because it gives the wrong impression;).

In A Nutshell: -Hap Hmm is the place where true locals go to grab an authentic Dutch meal. -Several reviews have recommended making a reservation, but I was able to walk in as soon as they opened at 5pm. -I did hear the phone ring several times from people calling to make reservations for later times, so if you decide to eat a late dinner, I would advise calling ahead. -I met this man who has been eating nearly everyday here, he was super nice & I sat down to eat dinner/chat. -The family that works there is very kind, I felt like I was invited into their house for dinner. -The menu is short & simple. -I first ordered the Dutch Shrimp Salad (the tiny shrimp are fresh from the North Sea), it was served a small glass cup w/ some greens & dressing. -My main course was the Viennese Schnitzel which comes w/ a side of boiled or roasted potatoes & peas/carrots. -I love eating schnitzel when I visit Europe & theirs did not disappoint :) -The boiled potatoes & peas/carrots paired perfectly. Overall, the prices aren't bad, very affordable & the entire dining experience was very homely.

Amazing service and great food, we had 2x of the soup of the day (chicken soup) and also a crayfish salad for starters. For drinks we got craft beers (very refreshing) and a ginger and lemonade. Everyone that served us was always smiling and the atmosphere was great. For mains we had 2x of the Dutch steaks (asked to be cooked as medium rare), a stewed beef and chicken breast with stroganov sauce. Unfortunately the Dutch steak that I ordered came out as rare, however as the rest of the meal was enjoyable, I decided to not mention it (see one of my photos of the steak cut up to see how purple it is.) We also had some sides, including fried chips, Pete's and carrots, green beans, beetroot, spinnich and egg. Another thing to note is at the time of posting this review they only have 1 toilet and it's tiny. However it was very clean. Overall I would come here again, however if you like medium rare like I do, perhaps just order medium instead.

The food: Absolutely exquisite! We ordered their soup of the day as a starter to share; it was a clear mushroom broth that was literally sent from the gods - it was that good! We followed this with their beef stew, it's their speciality and it didn't disappoint! I'm so glad I had this dish entirely to myself! It came with a decent helping of boiled potatoes and veg. It was a lot of food. The service: The older woman serving us was not very pleasant. When we placed our order (food and two beers) I asked for a glass of tap water. She said they don't serve tap water, instead I could have still or sparkling. Being the person I am, I'd rather go thirsty than be forced to order bottled water in a city with brilliant tap water. Anyway, she brought me a glass of tap water in the end - which I think was impotant otherwise I may have written a stinking review. There was another waitress that made up for the others poor behaviour; she was attentive and even engaged in some like questions and answers. The ambience and other things: It's a small, family run restaurant. It's got that very old, granny style to it which is so fitting for the food being served. It smells great inside and the tables are close together so it feels warm and lively. As far as I understand there's two rules; you have to order food (you can't just drink) and if you want some tap water you better order another beverage. Also, they aren't open on a Sat and Sun. In sum, I will definitely be back when next in Amsterdam... Oh and did I mention: two beers, one starter soup and two mains of beef stew came to ÂŁ45 ~ other...

This is an extraordinary, delightful jewel of a restaurant. Somewhat out of the way, definitely out of the mainstream, completely unassuming and un-self conscious, and oh so good! It's a rarity in Amsterdam, because it features authentic Dutch cuisine, done really well, without any of the touristy trappings of so-called Dutch restaurants in the more commercial sections of town.

I discovered the restaurant quite by chance, while walking around the neighborhood, as it’s rather low-key, but its warm and inviting presence piqued my curiosity, as well as it’s menu, which is purely Dutch.

We had a delicious mushroom cream soup, a schnitzel, and a chicken stewed in beer, and it was all perfect. As side dishes we had some creamed leeks and Brussel sprouts with faba beans, beautifully seasoned ( I’m not usually a fan of any of these vegetables, bit these were yummy!!), a portion of boiled potatoes, and a portion of fried potatoes. The thing is, neither the boiled nor the fried potatoes conform to the mental image that I carry for either dish: all I can say is that both were delicious!

I closed with a bowl of berries in a sort of home-made yogurt that again, defies description. Far better and tastier than it sounds.

The most remarkable thing? This restaurant is not expensive. It’s not “moderately priced”. In fact, it’s downright inexpensive! Surprisingly so! In other words, don’t miss it. You’ll be glad you went.

And if you’re visiting Amsterdam, and looking to experience truly authentic Dutch food that’s not made for tourists, and not overpriced, then this is the...

We had booked a table for three people. I was there ten minutes earlier and of course patiently waiting outside until the table was ready. The other two people lost the tram so they came 15 minutes later, but I was already seated and having a beer while looking at the menu. While I was ready to order for all of us (as the other two told me what to order by looking at the online menu), the lady that takes the food orders came and ask me in a weird tone if the others are coming. I politely responded that they are gonna be there in 4 minutes but before saying that I am ready to order she told me that she loses money with the people waiting outside and walk away(!) As I said, I already ordered a beer and I was ready to order for everyone. I found that super rude and it destroy my mood but I didn’t leave as indeed my friends arrived. We had to ask three times for her to come and take our order. We ordered a soup of the day, carpaccio and a salad, beef stew, chicken in beer sauce and grandmother’s meatball. The last one was too salty the rest were very nice. We also got two desserts, the pudding and the chocolate cake, 5 beers and a bottle of water. I think 100€ bill in this restaurant for three people compensates the 15 minutes of the delay of part of the company, but the rude behavior that ruins your customer’s mood doesn’t get fixed and we will not come back. The other waitress though was very...
