Ah, Chun Café in the Jordaan—a place where the lines are longer than a Dutch winter night, all for a piece of toast that’s been blessed by the TikTok gods. I approached this establishment with a mix of curiosity and dread, having heard tales of queues that rival those for a new iPhone release.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by a line that snaked around the corner and seemed to have no end in sight. Fellow food adventurers stood there, eyes glazed over, clutching their phones as if to document their impending culinary conquest. The anticipation was palpable, and I found myself swept up in the collective madness.
After what felt like an eternity—during which I contemplated my life choices and developed a mild case of trench foot—I finally reached the counter. The famed fluffy toast was within my grasp. I placed my order, handed over a sum that made me question the value of bread, and waited.
The toast arrived, adorned with toppings that looked like they belonged in a modern art museum. I took a bite. It was…good. Not life-changing, not worth writing home about, but good. The kind of good that makes you nod appreciatively but not the kind that justifies standing in line for the better part of your day.
In conclusion, Chun Café offers a decent slice of toast, but unless you have an abundance of free time and a penchant for standing in lines longer than the Amsterdam canals, you might want to consider other options. Or, you know, make some toast at home and spare yourself the...
Read moreThis place has definitely changed over the years.
I have been going to this place for 4 years now, however there has been much changes and I’m not sure how I feel about it. For starters, they sadly removed much of their drink choices (some were amazing) and the option to have tapioca pearls with the drink. Second of all, the sandwich’s quality changed. They used to have more filling and now it has about half of what it used to. Additionally, they changed the recipe of the egg salad sandwich, thus it tastes more dull, which I don’t particularly enjoy. I do have to give it up to them and say that the matcha strawberry drink is absolutely delicious and I would come back only to drink more of it.
I think the biggest downside of this place is the big queues that they have everyday as it does take a while to be able to get inside, order, and sit down. You have to endure the lines even when it’s raining, windy or cold. As for the price, I think it’s the typical Amsterdam price (around 20€ per person). Finally, I do appreciate the personnel being friendly as I understand that it might be frustrating that everyone asks the same questions regarding the queue or the menu, nevertheless they are always willing to help with a smile and good attitude.
Overall, I think that if you have enough time to stand in line, this place is a nice lunch option. The only thing I wish is that they would go back to the sandwich quality they used to have, but apart from that, I still...
Read moreThe food was really tasty and can live up to the hype, considering you do like a mixture of savory and sweet brioche and egg salad. Unfortunately, you have to wait very verry long...
We tried to go on two occasions: First time on a Sunday around 3:30 an 4 pm, but the queue was way to long, so we didn't even try. Second try was on a monday, rather early, around 11.15 am, but even the queue seemed to be short, we had to wait more than a full hour till we had our take away bag in hand...
The staff is very friendly and happy to explain things. However, we could not understand how 4 people in the kitchen seem to work so slow... And keep in mind that your drinks will be ready before your sandwiches, in case u wanna enjoy both together.
The ambient inside the Cafe is not cozy or welcoming to stay, since there at least 10 more people in the waiting are and the seating are is, like all other places in amsterdam, very limited and narrow...
Overall the food and drinks are very nice and live up to the hype, but the waiting time ain't worth it, even if you're early! And I would recommend to take your stuff on the go - where u also be able to take nicer pictures.
I hope that they will improve their concept and efficiency in the future so more people can enjoy their great products and don't have to leave disappointed because of way too...
