A nice Greek restaurant on Overtoom. Hospitality and atmosphere overall are very good - it feels Greek, the owners are Greek and very hospitable. It's great if you want to go there with few friends as the concept is food sharing (though not necessary). Prices are also pretty good for Amsterdam. The food, however, needs to go one level higher, both in terms of quality of ingredients and preparation. I have been at this place multiple times and I feel like the quality has gone down. For example, their oven-baked potatoes were slightly overcooked (my impression is that they were pre-prepared and just warmed up); same for tuna - it was overcooked. After eating you feel like 'this was good, I am full' but you do not walk out with a feeling 'this was the best food I've ever had'. I also noticed that the menu didn't change at all in the past couple of years - for me a good restaurant needs to keep innovating and experimenting. I would certainly recommend this place but would love to see them up their game and live up to...
Read moreSince 1992 is Dionysos Taverna my best Greek restaurant in Amsterdam. Owner Nikos is like a friend welcoming you in his house, and so you do feel here: at home. Yesterday evening we had just a few mezédes, starting with a sample of the delicious orektiká, the cold starters, served with hot pita bread. From above, clockwise: melitzána saláta, the aubergine dip smoked, earthy; taramá, salty fishroe dip; tzatziki, the iconic yougurt and cucumber dip with just a touch of garlic, fresh, and the tirosaláta, a dip of feta cheese with some spicy red pepper to tintle your taste buds. Then we had the féta saganáki, oven baked cheese served flambé at your table, the sardeles tiganites, light fried fresh sardines, and the delicious (so delicious I forgot to take a picture!) spanakópitas, crispy parcels filled with feta and spinach. No place left for a dessert. I (we) love this place, its pace, the...
Read moreGreat Greek food, with very nice and friendly staff and delicious food.
The plates are big with a great value, and in case of doubt you can ask the waiter, who will recommend you. For groups or couples they have some menus to share, including meat, fish and vegetarian mixes and one with a little bit of each.
We tried the variety mix (37€ for two people), with a delicious salad, some gyros (pork) and grilled meatballs, a mix of hummus and sauces and some calamari. Everything delicious and lots of food.
Oh, and they have a very nice white...
