Sigh.
I ended up at this restaurant after the vegan place I'd planned to visit was closed for the evening due to "unexpected circumstances."
Since I love Thai food and was already familiar with what I'd order, I figured what could go wrong.
Yikes.
I greeted the woman who would be my server (in Thai) upon arrival. Once seated, I asked a question or two. She seemed extremely annoyed with simple questions like, 'is there fish sauce in the curry?', so I avoided small talk.
My food arrived lukewarm and overly sweet. The lukewarm part was confusing. I was one of only two tables, and listened to them prepare the dish just before sending it out.
I flagged my serve down for soy sauce and chili to balance things out. She never returned. As I ate my cloying dinner, other tables arrived, and her demeanor was markedly different.
Two Caucasian couples took up a couple of tables, and a biracial girl of African descent took another.
In similar fashion to me, the server barely acknowledged the young woman and fawned over the two couples. In the span of 10 minutes, I knew about the couple's dog, the server's children who were studying abroad, etc.
I don't like to make things racial, but there was a clear difference in her behavior with me (a black woman) and the other person of African descent.
Though I only spent a few days in the Netherlands, I heard similar sentiments from others.
I'd rather not spend money on subpar food and poor treatment. Maybe she just didn't like serving tables of singles, but I doubt it. You couldn't pay...
Read moreIt was rather disappointing. First of all we ordered "salad with chicken, shrimps and vegetables" it is number 20 in their take away menu. Guess how many shrimps where there? Just 2!!!!! I ordered it because of shrimps, as I like sea food. When I told the woman that there were only 2 shrimps in the salad the answer was "Yeh". Yeh? Sounds a strange answer for me. I insisted and said it again, showing to the menu, that it had to be "salad with chicken, shrimps and vegetables" so there should be shrimps. She said that this is the way it is, in this salad there should be 2 shrimps only. Then it should be written another way, I believe. Second, we ordered a meet dish that comes with rice. We asked if we can change the white rice for fried rice, and the answer was yes. Still when we got the bill, we had to pay the full price for fried rice as a separate dish, thought we did not take white rice. One more strange thing... They where cooking in the restaurant itself, I mean in the restaurant hall, on a table for customers next to us, not in the kitchen... Very strange... I have never seen...
Read moreWow! Just absolutely lovely. After my last post on a Thai restaurant serving bland food, this is the polar opposite :) Simply lovely. We asked for the food to be cooked Thai Style, as the chefs themselves would like to eat, and they delivered 110%. Enough with the blandness that suits Dutch tastes, apparently. Let the chefs be free to do what they do best, for the benefit of others! I should not have to beg a chef for food cooked the way it is supposed to be cooked, should I? To the Dutch people with no pallet - please order a broodje kroket or a bolletje mayo from I don't care where. Leave good, authentic, talented chefs to do what they do best, and don't try to change a cuisine or a culture. Top Marks Chefs! You are my new favourites! I will always be a defender of proper Thai food - always! I would love to buy you all a beer, and I may just drop by...
